Something has happened to your 444 over the years - possibly the rear fenders were replaced? George has the definitive way of knowing whether the trim has been removed and the holes were either smoothed over with body filler or brazed shut. I presume the front fender trim is still intact as well as the upper door trim line strips.
Volvo did sell the PV444 in 3 variations: model P 44403 without any stainless steel trim strips, model P 44404 as a deluxe model with trim strips and an upgraded interior. They also sold an "export" model with silver painted bumpers, no trim strips and only available in 019 black. The most common model brought into North America was the P 44403, with the B14 motor and the HS4 dual SU carburetors. This number may appear on your VIN plate or registration.
Any base or pre-1955 models, like my B4B single down draft Carter carburetor version, 1953 PV444 "E" was brought into Canada by a Swede in the early 1990s. Colin Powell's 1953/54 that he donated to the VCOA may have been brought back by a serviceman posted to Europe. The European designation was identified by a letter and the deluxe version also has an S, so the deluxe version of my 1953 would be an "ES". A model year was not consistent and some early models even spanned 2 calendar years. Of course this made North American registration sometimes out of sync with a similar European designation.
