Okay to spray-paint wheel rim where tire mounts? 200

I'm having a few steelies sand-blasted and wanted to spray them with glossy paint. Should I not spray the edge of the rim where the tire beads go? I would at least like to treat it with POR-15 so it won't rust again.

Metal that has been sandblasted will rust in short order. It is absolutely imperative that you primer and paint any surface that you want to protect from rusting.

I am a big fan of Rustoleum, but have found that the nozzles tend to clog. You can't clear them by turning the cans upside down and spraying them. I pull the nozzles, wash them in lacquer thinner and blow them out with compressed air to insure being able to use all the paint in the can rather than having a clogged nozzle waste partial cans.

I plan on using POR-15, then a coat of primer, then POR-15 HardNose paint. I was worried that the POR-15 paint would be so slick that the tire may not seal well. I'm also worried about putting on too thick of a coating.

Factory rims, steel and aluminum, come painted - including the inside of the rim where the tire bead lays. It is rust and aluminum pitting that cause the tire bead to leak.

Unless the bead area is severely pitted, your first coat of POR15 is probably not needed.

You will need to let the paint layers cure for at least 24-48 hours before mounting a tire.

two years ago I sanded and painted a set of Steelies for snow tires. They hold air fine.
One coat of primer and two coats of rustoleum. They actually look better then I thought.

As long as u remove the rust and coat it with something containing a polymer, u r fine.
