Starter motor slow to disengage 200 1992

When engine is cold, I get a brief screeech ( about 1 second) from the starter motor as the engine starts. Anything I can do, short of replacing the starter motor?

Is the screech before or after it starts?

Screech comes immediately after it starts.

Probably need to pull the starter and clean and lube the gear and linkage to the solenoid. Also check the spring behind the solenoid.

I think the overrunning clutch in the drive is not releasing.

Yogi used to work with the Yoo-Hoo soft drink company. A woman once called and asked if Yoo-Hoo was hyphenated. Yogi said, "No, ma'am, it's not even carbonated."

Short of replacing the starter motor, you can get a new starter drive, and repair the starter motor. Or have it done at a local auto electric shop. If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then at least replace it with one from the junk yard, and avoid the "lifetime guaranteed" remanufactured unit from the chain auto parts store.
