How long can an engine run being overheated?? 900 1992

I wish it was that simple. she is now taking the bus to school. I feel that, as a Dad, it must be something I did not fix properly when I replaced the head on her car this past fall (2011).
At least she saw the temp gauge go into the red zone and stopped driving, even though she was going through a shady neighborhood. She waited for the AAA tow truck driver and got the car to her apt.
I'm hoping it is just a stuck thermostat or a blown fuse for the electric fan.
We'll see tomorrow.
