240 power steering pump 200 1985

Hi Everyone,

I owned a 1986 240dl in college and love them and their durability. The question I have is related to the power steering pump. I am restoring a 1967 Land Rover Series 2a (old safari trucks). As part of the restoration, I am converting it to power steering using a Toyota FJ60 steering box. I'd like to use the strong GM "canned ham" pump. Because the FJ60 box uses metric fitting i'd like to use a metric pump. Its my understanding that some of the older 240's used a GM "canned ham" pump. Does anyone know the years and models this was used on? Also, does anyone have one in good working order they would like to sell?

Thanka, Jason

I guess you are talking about the Saginaw unit used up through 85 on 240s? Should not be hard to find anywhere there is an older 240. I can't remember what the first 7-series used for ps.

I have good used pumps and the hose to go with them. Figure $40 plus shipping for the pump and hose. I don't recall offhand which years used the GM pump--the '76 244 we drove had a ZF pump---the '80 245DL and '84 245 Turbo we have now use the GM pump.
The pump end of the 240 pressure hose starts with a metal screw fitting on a hard pipe--changes to rubber--and then a metal fitting at the steering box end with a banjo fitting.
A truck parts house such as the Long Island Truck Parts chain we have locally can make a new hose to proper length when given the end fittings.
I can tell you an interesting bit of info---When I built my V8 265 I used the all aluminum motor from a 1963 Oldsmobile F85. It had a GM pump (round back then, not ham shaped) and I wanted to use it rather than fit one of the later pumps. What I found was that the screw in intermediate fitting at the pump interchanged from a "ham" pump to my round pump--the internal threads being the same in each pump--the outlet side of the fitting from the later 240 "ham" pump allowed me to use a stock 240 hose with no other mods other than to cover the hose with a flexible heat shield (found at the truck parts store) when my first hose "baked" from being too close to the left side exhaust manifold.
