cooling problem 900 1993

hi all,
just before I take the head off on my 1993 2.0 Turbo 940 i thought I'd check with the board to see if I should be chasing another problem.

Initial problem was water loss from bottle, followed by heater matrix failure, linked that out and noticed that bottle was pressuring up all the time, then rad developed leak at the bottom, removed thermostat. All suggested head gasket pressuring up bottle.

However, no external leaks, smell of antifreeze in exhaust, no plumes of white smoke and the plugs look OK.

Looking over engine today, started it with cap off and noticed level rise then overflow, then when engine turned off big overflow followed by last third of bottle disappearing in whirlpool fashion leaving bottle empty. One other thing noted was top and bottom radiator hose got hot quickly but radiator fan didn't come on. Tried using sniffer kit in the top of the bottle but it didn't change colour.

With the above symptoms could i be looking at another problem like water pump?

be glad of any opinions before I pull the head off.

regards
