Can the parking brake adjuster break? 900 1993

I was in the process of tightening up my parking brake today, using the big nut behind the ashtray. Everything was going smoothly, until I tested it - after ratcheting up about halfway with fairly normal resistance, the handle then became much easier to pull, going all the way to the top. Then everything went slack. The cables under the car are intact, in fact I'd just installed the repair kit that clamps around the axle to hold the cable more securely in place.

I've tried tightening the adjuster nut again, but as I turn it I feel a 'bump' after a few revolutions and it will no longer tighten anything. Is it possible that the connection from the cable to the parking brake lever itself is bad? The FAQ has a lot of details about replacing the cables, etc but doesn't seem to address this particular issue. Anyone had a similar experience? Thanks!

I got my long cable from a place called Partsamillion several years ago. Evidently they are still in business.

I paid $14 !!! It came in a plastic bag labeled Made in Sweden and looked like high quality.

I don't know about quality, but they do have a Scantech cable for $15.

The cables can rust through at the contact points on the axle. Take a hard look at cable integrity from the point it leaves the car body toward the rear axle and then as it divides into left and right cables.

The main (left) cable has probably broken, most likely right behind the ferrel at the park brake handle. The handle will easily lift up all the way. Both cables will be loose underneath. Loosen the center console and remove the plastic tray below the park brake handle and you should be able to see what's going on. This is the long main brake cable with integral adjuster sleeve and nut. Unfortunately it's rather expensive, especially compared to the right cable. FCP Groton carries a good quality aftermarket one or get genuine Volvo from on-line parts dealers like Borton and Tasca.

A few notes: You'll need to free the rear carpet a bit on at least one side (loosen the door sill and lower part of the rear jamb trim) to be able to lift it enough at the tunnel so you can feed the cable underneath. I also had to pull the left rear drum park brake shoes in order to access the attachment pin for that end of the cable. It was a bit of work, but I didn't see an easier way. Make note of how the original cable is routed to that yoke clamp you just replaced as it may not be totally obvious on your first attempt. If you want to replace the right cable at the same time then this is a good opportunity, but I didn't bother as the most common break point seems to be up at the handle.

    Have fun.

Thanks, Dave - that's very helpful info. Of course, this had to happen barely a week before my safety inspection! Hopefully that's enough lead time for me to get the parts...

While waiting for my e-brake cable to arrive I drove around with a couple of large wood chocks in the back seat. Maybe that plus a boat anchor on a chain to throw out the window in an emergency would keep your inspectors happy. ;)
