Moved to Georgia - Failed my NOX Emission Test - HELP!!!!! 200

91 240 automatic. New to emissions testing. After owning the 240 for 20 years I am now in the land of smog testing near Atlanta.

Here are the numbers:

25/50 Test

HCppm 127 Reading, 1267 allowed, Pass
CO % 0.56 reading, 0.71 allowed, Pass
NOXppm 2361 reading, 910 allowed, Fail
RPM 1759 reading, 3000 allowed, Max
CO+CO% 15.3 reading, 6.0 allowed, Min

50/15 test

HCppm 71 Reading, 132 allowed, Pass
CO % 0.42 reading, 0.73 allowed, Pass
NOXppm 1636 reading, 1006 allowed, Fail
RPM 16935 reading, 3000 allowed, Max
CO+CO% 15.5 reading, 6.0 allowed, Min

So I failed the NOX pretty badly. The ECM is throwing a 232 code - adjusting fuel system for lean or rich condition at idle.

Still getting the 232 code, and no others, but this is what I have done so far:

Replaced:

Plugs (Bosch Platinum)
Plug Wires
Dizzy Cap
Rotor
Air filter
Flame trap and hose
Oxygen sensor
Oil change with Mann filter and Castrol 10w30
Removed and cleaned throttle body, replaced gasket

I made sure all vacuum lines were in good shape with most clamped (probably overkill). And disconnected the Air Mass Meter as simple test (only one in my ability level) and the idle immediately worsened considerably. Plugged it back in and the idle smoothed out quickly.

I also made sure the flap to the manifold hose is closing properly. Coolant is clean and the temp gauge pegs at a hair under normal and is stable.

The CAT is 3-4 years old with probably 30000 miles on it, purchased from FCP Groton. Everything I read is the CAT seems to be OK based on the test results - the problem is probably a lean mixture.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I get a free retest and really would prefer to pass and get my Georgia plates!

Thanks!!!!

If you clear the code does it come back?

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator vac line for fuel or odor?

    I would use copper plugs.

Make sure the engine is well warmed up.

Maybe a can or techron injector cleaner prior to testing.

    Dan

Hi Dan - been awhile since I was here, good to see you again.

Just responded a second ago - ordered a fuel pressure regulator today as there was a fuel odor in the vacuum line, and am going to switch plugs. Thanks!

RE: spark plugs - I have had very good results using NGK standard copper plugs in all 3 red blocks in the family. (BPR6ES for your car)

copper or silver plugs. 200 1989

About the plugs; my 2 cents, as usual. Many mechanics have said platinum plugs no good for 240s. Use copper, OR, I have found SILVER plugs, (NOT platinum.) Pricey but works well and I like them. Hard to find however. Good luck.

Dave good luck with the retest. Back when I had my 85 245 and needed testing I never had any problems passing with flying colors. I was always amazed how well it did. Thank God that foolishness is over in FL.

I have run into this issue the last several years in Texas. Once my 1990 hits 25 years, I will be exempt from the two-stage tail pipe test.

From my experience, you will want to check the air cleaner housing box, and make sure that the thermostat pin is still working. When it fails, it fails in the open position, and this was the reason I failed my emissions test one year.

You will also want to check your downpipe that connects your exhaust manifold to your convertor. Make sure that the gasket is sealing the connection correctly, and that the downpipe itself doesn't have any cracks. This was an issue I had on another failed test.

Finally, I concur that the Bosch Platinum plugs are not a good choice. I used to run these plugs, however, I have switched back to regular copper plugs. I have also tried the iridiums, and they just run too hot for this engine.

Good luck with your next attempt. Always fun waiting while your car is on the machine, to see if it passes...

    If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 309,600 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

I think you're on the right path - lean mixture, which drives up NOx.

You've done all the basics, so here are a few other things to look for. Pull the inlet snorkel (big hose between AMM & throttle body) and carefully inspect for holes, especially on the underside (a dark room and a flashlight are helpful). If that checks out OK, then use the carb spray or propane method to check for intake manifold leaks.

Re-tension the timing belt - with the engine off, pull the plug in the TB cover and *lightly* loosen the 14 or 15 mm bolt inside. It has to be loose enough that the tensionser spring can move the idler, but not so loose the belt runs off. Crank the engine a few seconds (ok if it starts, but just for a second or 2) so the belt gets a few full revolutions. Then tighten the idler bolt back up.

One other thing to check if you have a timing light or can borrow one is to see how steady the timing is at idle and at a higher sped like 2000 or so. If the timing mark on the crank pulley jumps around a lot, then the rubber damper in the crank pulley is probably shot and the pulley needs to be replaced. This is a long shot, so check this last.

Just a comment in passing - the sexy platinum plugs probably aren't going to do much good for a B230 engine. Overall experience here on the BB is that conventional plugs work best. That said, their effect on emissions one way or another will be minimal.

I have a PDF saved on my desktop but it wont allow me to copy and paste due to it being a Toyota Motor company thing. But from what I'm reading I'll list what it says are possible NOX failure causes. Its saying that NOX can be caused by high combustion chamber temperature.

      Cooling system problems:
-insufficient radiator flow/low coolant level/thermostat stuck or bad/poor cooling fan operation.

      Excessive lean air/fuel mixture:
-leaky intake manifold gasket/worn throttle shaft

Closed Loop control system incorrectly shifted to lean

      Improper oxygen sensor operation:
-slow rich to lean switch time/ rich biased 02 sensor voltage

Improper or inefficient operation of EGR system (california)

      Improper spark advance system operation:
-incorrect base timing/ false signal input to ecm / improper operation of knock retard system

      Carbon deposits on intake valves.

Personally I'd be changing out the O2 sensor and intake manifold gasket as routine maintenance with 20 years on it. The cheaper splice in type info/bosch # can be found in the archive. Manifold gasket is a bit tough the first time. Be sure to remove and clean the oil separator box/flame trap assembly too. Good time to switch out the FI thermostat under intake #4. The large intake hose from AMM to throttle body has been mentioned and would be a good place to start too. Don't buy a new aftermarket one if you need to get a new one. Look for one in a pic n pull that is clean inside and low mileage.

I found a timing gun at a pawn shop for $10 once. If you need to check timing. If the mark is jumping around or non existent be sure to get a new crank pulley asap. Recently read on here that the Nordic brand is acceptable for replacement.

        Hello,

The CO readings listed are indicating a rich condition.

Is your car equipped with EGR?

EGR equipped vechicles should have a small pipe from the exhaust manifold that wraps behind the engine to the EGR valve under the intake manifold which in turn has an even smaller diameter pipe that goes to the intake manifold.

          Thanks gentlemen -

Interesting the NOX seems to indicate lean but CO rich.... the car is split personality I guess.

I really appreciate the help...... have rechecked all vacuum hoses and gaskets with carb spray - all is well. And I don't have EGR. So at least that expense isn't waiting around the bend. The exhaust looks good, I couldn't find any leaks. And I pulled and checked the intake bellows - it looked fine.

I did order a new fuel pressure regulator, as it had a strong gas smell when I checked the vacuum hose. Will get it installed next week and go to test #2.

Looks like the fellow bricksters have given the usual fine advice. My only response will be -- Welcome to Georgia! I am thankful that I live in a county that doesn't have testing.

              Thanks Randy - here is a follow-up....

Changed the plugs to NGK BPR6Es. Replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and found it was missing the rubber o-ring. Hmmmmm - wasn't leaking fuel, but. And it also showed signs of failing.

Am running a tank with Lucas injector deep clean stuff through and will retest Friday. We shall see!

              Thanks for all the help.

Got my fingers crossed for ya'.

My grandson lives in Henry county and it was a bit** getting his '93 240 to pass the last time. Wound up having to replace the cat. Did a complete tune up, checked vacuum lines, flame trap, fuel filter and I forget what else.

                Good luck;

                randyB
