89 240 Dead Odometer- wiring issue? 200 1989

Hi all,
Here's the history- pulled instrument cluster to replace ignition switch. After the change, lights quit working (turned out to be coincidence of bad bulbs). During one of my removals of the cluster working on this, in a rush I connected the red/white tach wire instead of the cruise control wire to the spade connectors. Now, odometer, trip odometer and cruise don't work. Speedometer works fine. In searching history, it appears that the connection I made could cause problems. I'm a little surprised the speedo still works. Odometer worked fine before problem so I'm assuming it isn't a gear problem but I haven't done anything to verify that.

Any thoughts? Did I likely fry something? If I did, what will it take to repair? Could it be one of the foil fuses?

I think we can live without the odometer but the cruise will be a bigger issue.
Thanks!
Lyle

Yes, you "fried" the integrated circuit, and to repair it will require another chip, another board, or another gauge - depending on the level of repair you are comfortable with.

One consolation - what you've done has been accomplished by dozens, perhaps hundreds of others, so you're in good company. The tach wire should have a danger label on it.

Thanks, Art. That is what I was afraid of. I knew better- just was in a hurry and missed it. I think the cruise wire probably had dropped so I just grabbed one and hooked it up. I'm planning on taping the end of the tach wire up the next time I am in there.

So do you have a sense of what specifically I fried? Is it on the main circuit board or something within the speedo head. I have another cluster that I pulled the speedo unit from but I think the rest was ok. Is it likely that I could just transfer the speedo head over to the bad one? I'm comfortable changing out pretty much whatever on it if I knew what to change.

Thanks!
Lyle

I don't have any help, sorry. Just wanted to say I'm dealing with the exact same thing. No odometer on the car I just bought, and the cruise is also not working. Odd. Let me know what turns up.
