240 wiring harness 200

I heard that wiring harness for older 240's were not available from Volvo. Is this true? Also heard that 1986 240 models and earlier have wiring harness problems whereas and 1987 and later do not so much. I always thought the 86 and 87 were nearly identical but do they have different reliability record with respect to the wiring harness. I drive an 87 wagon and years ago replaced the harness due to the casing disintingrating. I now have a chance to buy a pristine 86 DL sedan. Do I need to worry about the wiring harness? If it is a problem, can I get a replacement harness? Any other issue unique to the 86 240. I know my 87 well having owned for 20 years and love it.

Hi,

I personally don't have any experience with 80s era 240s, but I do know that I have read on here many many times that when people need a replacement harness they go to Dave Barton's page who seems to have a very good reputation.

WELCOME Dave,
You will find that the harness issue was carried into '87. If you are happy with the '86. the '87 is basically the same. The harness insulation issues on the '86 are no worse and no better then the '87...maybe very late '87 Volvo found a new manufacturer and got the insulation issue fixed.

Many folks here have fixed those 4 wires in the harness that give them the problem. That would be the 4 that go to the gray Connector on the firewall.
