A/C problem may be solved, after years of wondering S90-V90 1997

In the recent years past I have posted about A/C problems with this car, and did some work, too. Both pressure switches replaced, learned more about this specific system works, even bought a used compressor (not installed). The problem persisted.

System worked fine on starting up, even on a 100F day. After 20 to 30 minutes, the compressor kicks out (normal?) but would not kick in. So it's back to the 4-55 system (4 windows down, drive 55 mph). After maybe 30 minutes, system would come on again and blow icy air for a while, then out again.

So this time I had my indie shop do a drain re-fill and leak check, so that much is good. Then comes the old problem. So I wondered if it was icing up?

Now if I set the fan knob on Auto, air distribution knob on Auto, Re-circulation button OFF, and temp at 72F, it will run just fine for a long time. Setting the temp at 76F lets it run correctly even longer.

In fact, at start-up the re-circ button is ON, and the fan at full speed. As the car cools, the re-circ button turns off and the fan slows.

The car lives in the driveway, shaded by tall pines and many oaks. If the years of falling tree stuff has made a clogged up air intake, I think that such a restriction would make for pre-mature icing. That theory fits with system performance, so far.

So my next step would be to clear out any restrictions from the air intake duct work. But danged if I can see how to do that?

Any ideas will be welcome.

Thanks,

Bob

I doubt that the air flow is restricted besides you would know that by simply feeling for lack of air at the dash vents. I agree with dewfpo, it is most likely the inline temp switch at the compressor. Happened to my V90. Bypass it.

Evaporator Icing up may be what's causing your particular problem, but another issue I and many others had was a poorly designed A/C compressor over-temp sensor. the reason I say poorly designed is because Volvo took it out of the circuit on later units and advised dealers to wire around it when a customer complains. It didn't seem to hurt the compressor to wire around it.

The compressor would work fine on first use and then at some point the sensor would trip the power to the clutch and the compressor would not engage. Wait some period of time (1/2 hr or longer) and it would kick back in again.

If it is indeed an evaporator icing problem you might be a little low on refrigerant (R-134a).

A/C problem may be solved, after years of wondering, not any more... S90-V90 1997

Drove quite a bit today, the cool a/c was nice. After a 7 mile trip, and a short stop there, got back in and the a/c would not engage. No fun at 98F, nor would it kick in during the next 7 mile trip. Drat.

DEWFPO has to be correct. The 1998 S/90 that wife drives has no wiring octopus on the compressor, and it run all the time. Also, the used compressor I got was from a 1998 and it has the "old fsshioned" one-wire compressor connection.

So its on to the the by-pass wiring job, or only short cool-weather drives. Fat chance!

Likely that the duct work has considerable stuff in it, and the words on how to get in there are helpful. I suppose that disconnecting the battery would be necessary since there is a passenger side air bag to consider.

      Thanks to all,

      Bob

pull the glove box and you can get to the evap box. if you have pass. side airbag, takes a little longer to screw with that and the brace for the knee bolster. just pull the lid and you can see everything. alot better than a 240 or a 740. good luck, chuck.

What I did on my 73 145E when I had the heater out of it was to get inside with the
leaf blower and blow the cotton picker out!
I believe the air comes out at about 185 mph so that should be stronger than whatever blew the stuff in there in the first place.
