Noisy rockers etc under the valve cover. 200

I'm thinking about adjusting the rockers/valves on my 91 240. Is this a big job and do I need any special tools or shims?

Dan

People have been saying that it may just be the 'Hushers' Small plastic/rubber pieces on the valve stems. They get hard and break away. I bought a set from Groton already.. Next Timing Belt change I will change out what is left of mine.
I will measure the clearances before the swap out to see if I need any adjustments/ Tappet swap outs

Thanks for the link. I take it these are just as good as Volvo brand?

I replaced the hushers in three or four cars and I don't think I will replace them any more. They don't last very long. They just cannot take the heat and the beating. Even in my wife's 1995 with 34k when new to us, had totally mushed and melted hushers.

My guess, marketing wanted the engines to be a little quieter at the new car lot.

I have no experience in comparing OEM with these. I've never had teh Cam out to even see them. I just bought them from Groton. I will use them next Timing Belt change.
I didn't even price OEM because the two Volvo Dealers that are within 60 miles of my house are such helpless, inconsiderate, rude jerks that they will not get my business. If you are not a Cash Cow to the dealership by buying a new Volvo every couple of years, they see you as a waste of their time. And if you are a DIYer, they really dhate you. They are missing out on $125+ and hour.

I highly recommend the kit from IPD. It has all the shims and tool. You only pay for the shims you use. I did this on our 240 and '93 940 and both were quiet afterwords. Get a magnetic 'pencil' to capture the shims and I used the offset (bent) feeler gauge from IPD too.

The job wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The shims come right out with the magnet. I used a micrometer to measure the old so I could guess at the next best size. Good Luck.

Do you happen to have a link to this kit or a part number?

I'll have to look at this kit. The noise isn't bothering me but I would like to check to see if the valves need adjusting.

To measure the clearance, all you need is a 10mm wrench to remove the valve cover and a feeler gauge to check the gaps. If you find out of spec tolerances, new shims will be needed (rare). You will also need a shim carrier compressor tool to change out the shims. That being said, if the tolerances are in spec and you still don't like the noise, remove the cam and the shim carriers, then replace the "valve hushers (a rubber doughnut)" that sit around the top of the valve stems. The hushers always wear out and turn to dust, but don't impact the valve clearance for some weird reason.

Where do you get the "hushers"? Dealer? What do you ask for?

You can get them from the dealer or with a OE head gasket kit, I'm sure there are other sources but I'm not aware of them. I believe I have a few sets at home but will have to verify before committing. If I have them, postage costs and your address will be all that is needed.

ps. I like the sewing machine noise!

You can buy them by the handful from pretty much anywhere that sells Volvo parts. FCP or IPD, for example.

That said, I'd want something of good quality.... seeing how they're rubber, live in oil, and get hammered like 1000 per minute. :-)

Elring, Volvo, or bust!

Agreed,

Elring (Volvo OE), or Volvo is the way to go. Aftermarket gaskets and rubber parts are junk.
