Can you help identify this engine compartment noise? (audio file link)

1994 944t 208K

Pulled the wife's car in for a little maintenance this morning and hear a "rattling" noise under the hood.

Using a piece of heater hose to my ear I found the source to be on the front of the engine in the vacinity of the waterpump.

Checked the pump shaft for lateral play and found none (pump has about 30K on it).

Pulled the plug on the timing cover and listened with the hose thinking it might be the bearings in the tensioner, but the noise was not coming from there.

Removed the drive belts one at a time: AC belt off, no change; alternator belt off no change; power steering belt/waterpump belt off and the noise was gone.

I assumed this confirmed my thoughts that it was the waterpump, but an additional check of the shaft confirmed no play and spinning the pump by hand revealed no sound.

I replaced the power steering/waterpump belt and started the car. Absolutely no rattling sound. The belt tension was not changed from where it was originally because I simply rolled the belts off and rolled them back on. Replaced the other two belts and the sound has vanished.

If you listen to the video you will hear that it is a very metallic sounding rattle. The camera was placed right in front of the waterpump (no mechanical fan on the car). I thought perhaps it was a loose impellor but why would it go away by simply removing and replacing the belt?

Click here to listen to the recorded sound.

Thanks,
Randy

I replaced the power steering/waterpump belt and started the car. Absolutely no rattling sound. ... Replaced the other two belts and the sound has vanished.

Replaced as in renewed, or just put back on? I suspect "just put back on" because you say the tension could not have changed.

I don't know what the noise is. The tempo and beat reminds me of a stone in a hubcap, and the tone and decay give the impression of a stamped pulley, yet there's a solid component that says casting to me.

Were I the maintainer, I supposed I'd spritz the belts to make sure it wasn't belt/pulley adhesions (wild but quick to rule out) then pull the pulley to check for the wages of your belly pan sin, before pulling the pump. Then again, maybe I wouldn't. Situational kind of thing.

Really nice way to document a RWD post.

Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.

Yes, I simply reinstalled the original belts.

I only drove the car twenty miles after putting the belts back on but the noise has not returned at this point. It is a puzzler.

Is there any Push/Pull play in the Water Pump shaft?
The 4 nuts are tight holding the Pulley to the pump?

I may be wrong but it didn't sound like it was directly related to engine speed. When you raced the engine, it seemed like it took awhile for the rattle to also speed up.

No, no end play on the waterpump shaft and the pulley is secure.

When I went back and listened to the audio I, too, believe that it apparently is not directly related to engine speed. When it returns (and I feel that it will) I will look into that more.

I have seen the impeller (is that the rite word)on the inside of the WP shaft break its bond and start spinning freely and also rattle,if this was the case you will notice a change in engine temp. It was most likely a foreign object caught behind WP pulley and then perhaps slipped out never to return. Are you running with or W/O a belly pan?

My wife reminded me that she had brought this to my attention some time ago, so evidently it is not new to this car. Probably just a temporary condition that it went away, thinking it will creep back at some point.

No belly pan, but I really don't think it is caused by debris.

Temperature gauge rock steady at 12:00.

Let me know when you figure it out. Mine occasionaly makes a very similar noise. Much more frequently when cold but still very infrequent. I assumed I had dropped a nut in the timing belt cover or something.
