1977 Volvo E85 Fuel Conversion 200 1977

Raidman et al,

I converted my 1977 Volvo 264GL to run E85 last week. The engine is a 1983 Volvo B23F with the flat top pistons at a 10.3:1 compression ratio.

The fuel injectors are late style (circa 2011) port injection type quad disc valve style. The fit and profle interchange directly with the original old low impedance needle solenoid style. The electrical connectors and retaining clips fasten perfectly. Flow rate was matched to produce stochiometery at the E85 air fuel mixture for the LH 2.2 fuel computer. Correct voltage swings were confirmed at the O2 sensor output.

Fuel economy has declined as expected due to the lower energy content of the alcohol, but the power output has increased and the engine makes a markedly more striking and vicious race car sound. I expect this is from not only the increased combustion pressure, but also the cooler charge air combustion and subsequent density increase.

Starting and drivability has improved due to the better fuel atomization.

I will report again in the coming days.
