I received the replacement flex pipe from FCP Groton but it's inner diameter is too small to fit on either the air box or the shield. I need this part to pass "visual" emissions inspection in NC... don't worry, the valve in the air filter box will never open again... hehehe!
Any other sources I should go after?

The preheat hoses have been broken on my two '88 240's for at least 10 years. I always heard that the the contribution of the hose is minimal, and the damage to the AMM if you have a bad airbox thermostat isn't worth it.

Please read the original message, the valve in the air box is blocked so it doesn't smoke a now outrageously expensive LH 3.1 AMM. In NC, they do a visual emissions inspection, all the parts have to be there, even if they don't do anything.
It's a very similar situation to the old "Ford trick" of putting a solid thin steel plate between the EGR valve and the intake manifold... passed visual inspection and prevented poor running.

Sorry, I missed the part about the "visual" and I went right past the hehehe!
Here in Jersey, they are more lenient. I never had a problem with the broken hose.
I guess if the hose was gone completely, they'd know it should be there?

In NC, the EPA Gestapo has a habit of slipping old cars into the inspection stations. A few years ago, an inspection station that I had used for years was fined $25K for one bad inspection and they lost their inspection license for a year. Two months later, the Texaco shop shut down, was bull dozed and replaced with a Starbucks. Around here, inspections are jokingly serious!

can't you just duct tape it for the visual?

Weather,
Decades ago I used duct tape to get home when my car died on the road. Over the past decade though, I prefer doing a job once so I don't have to mess with it again during my lifetime.
Time is limited, and reliability is key... but then again, this dang pre-heat hose is just an annoyance imposed by an uneducated state government!
Fortunately, Steve A is sending me a used replacement. Thank you very much Steve!

Nice! How did you mail a preheat hose? Inside a big box all coiled up?

Jorrell, Check out wikipedia on 90-93 740 volvo745 The factory increased the rod size significantly and other make it sturdy up grades, but seems they lost the intercooler in the process boo! Perhaps this is a good 8V to begin with?
