Adhesive for re-attaching side mirror glass? S90-V90

I have a '98 V90 and a couple of nights ago, I was driving on the freeway and the glass just fell out of my driver's side mirror. The smooth rubber-feeling backing left behind in the mirror housing is still there.

I did some searching on the 'net and have located several sources that will sell me the mirror. But I was wondering what would be the best adhesive to use to re-attach it, so I don't get a repeat of this event again? And also whatever adhesive I use, I don't want it to degrade the underside of the mirror surface, such that the mirror may become less silvered some time down the road.

I was thinking maybe just regular old contact cement. It sticks to just about anything and remains flexible pretty much forever. Or maybe a silicone product? Cyanoacrylate? Gorilla Glue?

Just ordered the glass from eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360305637661&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

Does the method they recommend work / last?

Having been in the autoglass replacement business for over 20 yrs. my advise is to use a "primerless quick-cure autoglass urethane adhisive",I would not trust the Burco pads,if you do choose to use the Burco pads be sure every thing is clean and dry and do not touch the surface of the pads as this will compromise the bond.

I can not make a recommendation for a particular adhesive for the repair. However, I can tell you that silicone would not be a good choice.

I looked into adhering mirror plate years ago and my supplier told me not to use silicone. Apparently it will attack the plating. Their suggestion was to use construction adhesive ("Liquid Nails") for my application.

Ha Ha! Not even a month ago, the same thing happened to my car. The difference is i could see the mirror wobbling in the mind, and I peeled it off before it got a chance to fly off. The problem at this time of year is that water gets behind it, and freezes. After many cycles of that, it loosens up.

Anyway, i replaced mine with Gorilla glue from Home Depot. It has held on well so far. 4 pieces of advice:

1. I made the mistake of giving the back surface a light pass of 220-grit sand paper to give the glue a little extra surface to bite. HUUUUUGE mistake. I didn't realize it until after i glued it back up: you can see each and every scratch on the front of the mirror. What a bonehead move on m part.

2. Don't try to pick the old black adhesive off the mirror mount. It's spongy, and somehow integral in the mirror's heating function.

3. If you go the Gorilla Glue route, remember that it expands as it dries. Don't freak out when you see it oozing a little bit around the edges of the mirror. It trims off easily with a razor blade.

4. I found that two of these clamps worked great to hold the mirror in place while the glue set. http://www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-spring-clamp-39530.html I actually used a plastic version of this clamp. It's not nearly as forcefu (i.e. won't crack your new mirror) Most good glues have a long cure time, so just set it up in your garage int he evening, and it will be good to go by the morning.

Hans,
Just had the same experience with my 965. Like your idea of Gorilla glue. Wondering whether it held up over the long run?
Thanks
