Is it brake booster vacuum leak or fuel injector? stalling & ruff running 200 1993

210k miles on a '93 245.

This morning I started the car and when I pressed the brake pedal the engine revved up. Then the engine stuttered and stopped. When I started it again and pulled onto the street, it was stalling as I drove up the street even when I was depressing the accelerator. (I turned around and parked the car and got a ride with someone else.) Tonight I started the car and the check engine light was on so I read the code as 1-1-3 (Fault on fuel injectors).

I'm thinking the problem may either be the brake booster (since the engine stalled this am after the brake pedal was depressed) OR a fuel injector problem (since the code is on and when I drove it tonight the brake pedal didn't seem to affect the rough stalling). Need some ideas of what to check to narrow this down. Thanks,

Cabbie

I would take a look at your fuel injector grounds and make sure they're good. I can never remember if newer 240's with LH2.4+ have OBD1 ports, but if they do, there's a test mode that will cycle the injectors, among other things.

Good Luck

I'll use the diagnostics to run on the injectors to see if it's the injectors causing the problem.

The 113 error code indicates that the drive current to the injectors is too high or too low, note that all four injectors are in parallel and virtually bullet proof. My guess would be that if you have an LH 2.4 car with a pink label ECU, the ECU bit the dust unless the engine harness is rotted out (highly doubtful in a 93). Our 90 tossed the same code after puking out up the street. I walked home, grabbed a white label spare LH 2.4 ECU, walked back to the car in shame and replaced the ECU... problem went away.

Sorry, I don't know what year Volvo quit the pink label ECU, but they were great in the low mileage days, now they are just a liability.

My first thought was the ECU...but the brake pedal thing makin the car rev up was puzzling to me. Last night I took her out for a spin and she runs fine on the road a high speeds..but when starting out at the stop signs, she sputters. Isn't there a way to unplug the ECU to see if it runs better?

There is no way the car will run with the ECU unplugged, it tells the injection and ignition what to do. How much does the idle go up/down when you press the brake pedal? If it is a "little", it is normal, if it rev's way up or down that is a different story. The fact is that the code your ECU threw indicates bad injectors which from experience means a bad ECU especially if it is a pink label.

Hi John,

All my 93's came with the 951 ECU.

I have had a problem with a faulty brake booster about two years ago. As you said, how much does the idle pulse when you apply the brake? Especially if you really apply a hard brake say at a stoplight.

I seem to have solved my problem by removing the booster and carefully sealing the vertical seam with silicone, but before I suggest anyone go through that hassle, verify that there is, in fact, a problem with a leaky booster. You can find some info either in the archives or elsewhere on the web concerning how the booster should work and troubleshooting problems.

Marty

Yes, I've recently joined the 300K club and I am proud.

Marty,

Welcome to the 300K mile club! As I'm sure you can, the journey has been long, hard, and fruitful!

ps. As you know, the removal of the brake booster is a real PITA! Those four nuts on the inside of the firewall that are almost impossible to get to!
