Starting problems 700 1991

1991 740 Turbo having issues. Here is my story....

Original problem was on start up idle was very rough. My son said that it would improve after it warmed up. I pulled and cleaned throttle body, and after I replaced it the battery was dead / would not turn over. Charged battery, had it tested, and cleaned terminals. Now it turns over (although it seems a little sluggish) but still wont start.

Stuff that may be important...
1. I did remove the electronic component on the TB itself. Did I possibly mis-align something on re-install?
2. Before the rough idle presented I had to replace the thermostat. Any heat related issues possible?

So we went from rough idle to wont start at all...now sure what to check next. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Well....4 spark plugs later she starts right up and the rough idle appears to be gone! Thanks Bill!

I also want to look at the distributor/rotor...any tricks to pulling that with the screws facing the fire wall?

Don't go aftermarket on cap/rotor. Go with Bosch. Also mark your plug wires "before you pull them". Easy to get them on wrong.

Actually the plug change was surprisingly easy. I was able to do them "one wire at a time" and my real fear of broken wires never materialized....

8mm/ 5/16ths ratcheting box wrench makes it easy, but a regular wrench will get them started and then often they'll be loose enough to unscrew by hand. The screws are captive in the cap so they don't fall out, which helps.

        Starting problems 700 1991

First day off and I have not yet got to the distributor but new symptoms. Starts fine. Idles low (500 rpm - what is recommended and best way to adjust?). Also it seems to be building up pressure in the radiator. After it runs a few minutes I am seeing a "pop off" at the reservoir which re-occurs every 2 to 3 minutes. So far temp gauge is normal - and the thermostat was replaced recently...What should I be looking at?

        Thanks!

    Hi Gary,

I wonder about the battery going dead. Get a voltmeter on it and see that you get]
14VDC with the car running. If the red piggyback lead at the battery is loose or
off, you wont get proper charging.

Cleaning the battery terminals isn't enough. The crimpon terminal ends can go west
with aging. Carefully examine each battery terminal end. You can use your ohm meter to do a quick check for really lossy or broken off cables.
There's twin ground wires and twin pos wires.
If there's a problem with bad cables, it will raise hell all different ways.

The running rough may indicate that it's time for a major tuneup.
What do your plugs look like? If they're platinum, switch to NGK copper.
Pull your distributor cap and see how nasty it is.

    Post back, Bill
