Went out to get a newspaper and some coffee creamer, and as Helga(1985 245) was about to shift from 2nd to 3rd, I heard a loud screech and she quit. I tried to restart, and it seems like one cylinder is firing, but no start. Any ideas? I'm thinking its a timing belt issue.

Come to think of it, when the alternator in my Jetta died it screeched. Typically when an alternator dies all the dashboard lights will also come on.

Does it turn over like normal or a little faster?
Screeching could be a failed harmonic balancer or anything else attached to accessory belts.

Easy check for timing belt: Have someone crank the engine while you are looking through the oil fill hole. If the cam lobes aren't moving, the belt is broken.

Cam is turning, but it acts like it has jumped timing. I've got it in the garage now, and will be pulling the timing cover off to check. I can hear the fuel pump run, and everything else sounds normal. Cranking speed is normal as well. It was really cold here this morning, but she fired right up. Maybe I should have let her sit and warm up a tad before taking off. I'll figure it out. The enging speed was at about 4 grand when it shut down. The screech started, and I backed off the throttle. That's when I noticed that it was not running any longer, and all the dash lights had lit up. I have a fairly good sized hill to climb when leaving the driveway, and as I posted earlier, she was about to make the 2-3 shift. Never ever done anything like this in her life.

I got a screech in an older 240 once and turned out to be that the alternator froze. But it didn't quit on me.
So maybe you're on track w/ timing belt jumping. When you say "acts like" that, what's it doing.

Pulled the timing cover, and put the crank and cam on the marks. Pulled the distributor cap and the timing was way off. Reset the distributor, and she fired right up.

I'm guessing teh Belt jumped a tooth or two.
How loose is the belt?

I think that sudden deceleration from fairly high rpm can put a "wave" in the belt or something like that so it jumps, especially if it's a bit loose.
My son's belt jumped at the crank sprocket, just after he passed a car on the Jersey Tnpk, then suddenly realized he had quickly slow down for an exit. He had to wait for a tow truck at that exit.
I also think he may have not retensioned that belt at 600mi after I installed it. But at least he got it fixed with (or in spite of) my phone instructions;-)

If you didn't change the belt you might want to reset the tensioner.

I will do just that, but it will have to be in a month or so. I just got home from the hospital with a couple of new bypasses. I was working on Helga, and began to perspire profusely. Wife got me to local ER, who promptly had me transported to a great Nashville Heart Unit. Prognosis is good.

Stickbuilder,
Glad to hear you caught things in time to get the help you needed. Hope the recovery goes well. Wish I was closer to lend assistance. Helga will be there when you are ready. Until then, follow your Dr's orders and mend well. ---rick

A few years ago Flab was facing some pretty complicated surgery. You had some extremely ugly comments to make.
How should you be treated now in the same condition? Should I let everyone know how inhumane and unpleasant you were, to think about when you want their sympathy?
Do you deserve any sympathy?
See if you can answer me honestly, and I hope your current condition makes you consider apologizing to her for your truly horrible comment.

Never asked for any sympathy. I was just stating a fact, that it would be about a month before I would be able to do any work on the car. Thanks for coming over to where people actually help each other. I thought that you and those of your ilk only haunted the opinion forum.

My cousin is a long time poster on this forum. She required several hours of reconstructive surgery a few years, and because Stickbuilder didn't like her politics, he decided to ridicule her, and make fun of her health condition, wishing her to suffer.
Don't you find that filthy? Where were you then? I've seen you around posting. I can find the post for you.
I am asking Stickbuilder, if he would like to receive as he has done unto others.
Or, instead, if he would like to apologize for his own filthy conduct.
What would you do? Doesn't Jesus say do unto others as you would have them do unto you?

Holy Crow! I'm glad you're all right. I highly recommend bicycling and free-weights, when you're up to it.
Let Helga wait, you already did the fun part (figuring out the problem), and you won't be needing her too much when you're recovering.
Take care

Well, all I have left to do is to put the belts and timing cover back on, followed by the Swamp cooler fan clutch and the shroud. A good friend wants to do it for me. He's a good wrench, and I trust him.

A good friend came over today, and we got Helga going again. The distributor had tried to seize and caused the intermediate shaft to jump timing. He retimed the engine and installed another distributor that I had on hand. She runs like a champ once again. Now to get the Cardiologist to allow me to drive again.....

Good to hear you got Helga back on the road.
My Dad said there was an easy way to tell if an item of food was on his heart diet after his little bypass incident a few years back.
Just slip a little of the food item in your mouth and see if the food has any taste at all. If it does have any sort of taste or flavor spit it out, it's not on the diet.
Good Luck,
Paul

re: "...the crank and cam on the marks. Pulled the distributor cap and the timing was way off. Reset the distributor, and she fired right up...."
You wrote that the "crank and cam" were good -- does that mean that you didn't check the intermediate gear? That's the one that drives the distributor, so if that somehow had jumped a belt tooth (causing your engine failure), that would explain how and why your distributor was off. And so, having readjusted the distributor now, the next time you replace the belt and set all three gears to their marks, the distributor will be off again.

Hi. That message to Stickbuilder went (by email) to me, instead. I think you have to reply to one of his messages for your message to get to him by email.
Happy holidays.
