coolant problem S90-V90

My Volvo has developed a slow coolant leaking problem: there are coolant
traces on both sides of the radiator, and several of the hose connections;
it looks like the system may have too high pressure. Could this be a
symptom of plugged radiator? I've changed the coolant a little over a
year ago, together with water pump and some hoses/clamps. The coolant
now is mostly clear (I mean bluish green), with some sediments in the
overflow tank (there used to be a lot of crud there, so I changed the
overflow tank with the collant as well). The car has almost 157k on
the odo and is 13 year old (1998 V90), so I figure it's time for a
new radiator anyways. Just wonder if that would take care of the
leaking problem...
Thanks,
Vlad

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'll try to get the car checked by my mechanic before this weekend (he's a real busy guy though...). There's no pressure in the expansion tank when the car is cold, but I'll get someone who has the equipment to test it on the running engine and look for other signs. Thanks again.

Do a test on the coolant for the presence of exhaust gases: if they are in the coolant, then your head gasket is leaking. But I also agree that a 13 year old radiator is way overdue for replacement.

If that radiator is really 13 years old, it should be changed. Most are lucky to last 10 years. So that would be a great place to start.

As far as pressure, without testing with a gauge then it is just a guess, 13 year old hoses can get soft and puffy with age. Might be a good time to change those also.

    Hi,

What is the cold rest pressure of the cooling system? If it is a positive value, you may have a head gasket failure.

Also measure the hot rest pressure. It should be less then 10 psi in all cases.
