Starter differences 900 1991

Hi, I'm looking for some clarification about starters. I have a 740 and a 940 turbo wagon. Boith are B230FT engines. The 740 is a M46 trans. The 940 is a 940SE B230FT, AW71 trans. The starter for my 740 is a lot smaller in diameter than the one on my 940. The 740 starter is attached by 2 long bolts that thread into the starter casting. The 940 uses the same (length & size) bolts but the casing isn't threaded. Nuts are used to lock the bolts.

Looking for a starter for the 940 sellers list them as the same for both what gives?

cheers ian

    And the problem was....the battery 900 1991

I love this. How dumb do I feel. I find all these little things that really aren't causing the problem. The battery charged up fine 12.5VDC but as soon as you cranked it it dropped low enough so it wouldn't fire. The voltage drop tests I had said the battery residual voltage of 10VDC was good. Nope nadda at all.
    Done works like a charm.

Thanks all for your info. It helped and added to the data base (mine).

    cheers ian

I swapped the starter (lots largerand twice as heavy) out of my 940 with one I had that is the smaller, higher power version. I didn't get any #'s, salt is funny that way. The smaller starter draws less current than the larger one I pulled out. Car turns over much faster now. I need to do the 3-4 stop & starts in a short time frame to confirm problem is fixed. Looks good so far.

Oil spraying the 940 tonight. Gawd I love my hoist. 3 car payments which I don't make is all it cost.

    sign me grinning stupidly.

Your 940 probably has had a transplant earlier and the starter was replaced with an earlier 240 starter.
This is bulkier and @1.1kW instead of the newer smaller @1.4kW.
    They are both interchangeable.

Ahh this is interesting and supports what I figured the problem is, a higher draw/failing starter. Everything else in the circuit is good. I'll confirm this with a current draw check tonight.

My 940 always started more slowly than my 740, both B230FT motors.

      I'll let people know.

      BB helpful as always.

    Dear ibs740,

Hope you're well. Volvo VADIS - the now-superseded Volvo dealer parts and repairs database - shows that for all 740 and 940 cars (turbo and normally-aspirated; manual and automatic transmissions) the starter is Part #3523301, which was superseded by #5003564.

This Bosch starter is rated at 1.4 Kilowatts. An on-line parts database confirms that the same item (part #3523301 superseded by 5003564) fits almost all models from 1984 to 1995 (240 [up to 1993], 740 [up to 1992], 760 [up to 1990] , and 940 󞩷-95] manual and automatic transmissions). This part even replaces starters designated as Hitachi-made items. Your 740 may have an Hitachi unit.

The parts diagrams do not show any variant mountings. However, Volvo is (in)famous for such variations, that are not shown on parts diagrams.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I have to wait till Monday to get a starter. The local wrecker shows two different starters. I'll see.

I don't know, but I'd be interested to find out when you do. Have you tried using the bosch parts finder to confirm parts numbers? Maybe the difference is from the different transmissions.

1990 740 Turbo, on its way to stock specs, maybe beyond
