Time estimate for power steering rack? 200 1990

Getting ready to do both of mine this weekend. While I'm sure the second will go faster than the first, any sort of average time estimate from the accumulated wisdom here at BB?

(I've got other front suspension work to be done at the same time, so there will be time to add on top of the rack itself...)

    Thanks all. 200 1990

To my disappointment, other projects seem to have taken precedence over the weekend of the power steering racks. Either way, I appreciate your input and hope that it'll come together over the next weekend or three instead.

When the second arrived last November.

    Cheers,
    Zach

I have never done one on a 240 but my advice based on my 940 experience echoes James' post. Rust and corrosion can make the nuts/bolts that hold the rack in place very difficult. Heat, a big hammer and more time than I had estimated were necessary in my experience.

Any time an airbag is involved you would be wise to disconnected the battery before beginning work that involves hammer blows.

    Good luck

The big unkown time factor is how long its going to take to get the lower u-joint free. Make sure you "lock" the steering rack with the key and that it clicks locked else your SRS clock spring can be damaged.

I did the rack on our 745 and spent most of my time removing the two bolts that hold the rack in place.

They loosened up easily, but they had rusted between the two flanges that they passed through. It took time to remove some rust, spin the bolt and remove more, etc.

If I had to do another rack, I would first remove one of these bolts, clean it, and re-install it, then repeat the process on the other.

The rest of the job was reasonable.

Have you ever seen this site?

    http://repairpal.com/estimator/results

It gives you the estimate in $'s, not hrs, but if you know the prevailing flat rate in your area you can make a fairly good estimate.

Roughly four hours assuming that you are doing inner and outer tie rod ends AND the outers are not frozen in place. Yesterday I had an outer tie rod end that was so stuck that it took me a blow torch and an improvised 5 ton hydraulic press to get that bugger out along with three more hours of time. It can also take extra time getting the lower steering shaft U-joint to properly connect with the input shaft on the rack, patience is advised....
