1988 245 DL Tail Light Defroster Electrical 200

1988 245 DL

Here is my issue. I have the bulb out warning light that goes from off to faintly on while driving and then to on when braking. From reading around on the board sounds like it might be a grounding issue. The second part to this is my rear defroster does not work as well. Sometimes when braking the rear defroster indicating light will come on and the (best ever noise to hear happens) a relay makes that buzzing noise. Again from reading around on the buzzing noise this makes me think I one of the wires going to the relay making the noise is exposed. I have recently discovered that if I have the buzzing relay issue when staring the car with my foot on the brake. Then turn the card off then put the key in position II and press the defroster the lights in the instrument cluster faintly illuminate.

My questions are where should check for the grounding issue for the tail lights/defroster?
And I'm not completely sure as to the location of the relay for the defroster?

My questions are where should check for the grounding issue for the tail lights/defroster?

Check the wires that go through the cargo door hinges. They might be visible with the door closed by looking down on the hinges. Wires get abraded, cut, and sometimes touch one another. The two sides carry defroster, third brake light, license lights and wiper motor power, door lock, and one conductor to ground the door itself.

Grounds for the tail light panel are near the lights. Pull the side panel in the cargo area and look at the light area. In my experience that area stays dry and has few oxidation problems.

The relay for the defroster is in the dash area, maybe behind the central control panel. Another post for that.

Good Luck,

Bob

PS Look down to Oct 26 for a post from Anthony2 about replacing wires through cargo door hinges.

I replaced the tail gate wires a year ago but I will double check and see how they are doing. At this point it looks like I should get to work checking wires and cleaning connections.
