Engine Front Seal 120-130

I have a B20 engine in my 1967 122S.. I have a oil leak and I am pretty sure it is coming from the seal on the timing cover.(bottom pulley) I really have not looked very closely at it yet.. I looked at my Haines manual and it appears that you just remove the nut on the pulley and the pulley is supposed to come off easily they say.. When I bought the car there was a new timing cover with a seal included for some reason..I had planned to just take the new seal out of the new cover and slip it into the original cover for an easy fix.. I am just wondering if these timing covers are prone to cracking or whatever at it seemed odd that the previous owner had bought a new cover when only a seal appears to be needed.. I do not have a new gasket for the new cover hence my easy fix plan.. Anyone have experiance with this problem.. Thanks !!!

    Robert, when you decide to tackle this job, whether it's replacing the seal or the timing cover, give me a call and I can drop over and share my experiences. I replaced my timing cover and added the neoprene seal about 6 months ago.

    Properly installed there is nothing wrong with the felt seal. Remove the bolt and the pulley falls off. Pick out the big circlip, remove the thin plate, and pick out the old felt seal. If you are really feeling like you should check, get a .004 in feeler gauge and confirm that it fits in and slides easily around the crank snout between it and the housing. If it does, then the housing is centered. Oil the felt seal really well, push it in, and replace the parts. About ten minutes tops. And it won't leak if the crankcase breather system is working as it should. Far easier than installing the new neoprene seal.

    The new cover is probably machined for, and has installed, an elastomeric ("rubber") seal; the old one likely has a felt seal, whence the leak.

      Yes,,it has a rubber seal so more than likely the old cover will not take the new rubber seal..So,,I will now have to order a timing cover gasket before I do anything.. Thanks for the info. mcduck and so much for the easy fix.. lol

        Actually, it's a pretty easy swap. Pull the radiator for good access and don't forget the two pan bolts underneath the bottom edge. It's also an opportune time to check your timing gear for wear and the gear oiling nozzle for blockage.

          Thanks to everyone for all the info regarding the front seal.. Now I know why the previous owner bought a new timing cover with the new seal in place.. In a couple of weeks I will get the car up to my brother-in-law`s garage and go to work on this as well as a few other things .. Thanks Barry!!! It is nice to have a volvo guy with in 15 miles !!!
