Stalling, Electrical and Fuel Issues 200 1990

Hello All,

I haven't checked in for some time but need your help.

My main question is that in my 240dl, the #4 fuse is 'hot' all the time, meaning when I pull the fuse I still have continuity. The car has been stalling on/off for at least six months but has gotten worse to the point where it happens just about every time I drive the car now.

Replaced fuel pump relay with new but that causes car to stall out, die, and not restart.

I dropped the tank yesterday, in-tank fuel pump looks pretty clean, also made 'sound' when key turned on prior to dropping the tank (by listening at the fuel door).

My biggest concern is the electrical issue. I lost cruise control some time back, which relates to the same circuit on the red-yellow wire that connects the O2 sensor, fuel pumps, etc. Could this be linked?

Thoughts appreciated.
cheers->

Hi I had a problem like yours and the grounding was my problem. There is a ground wire near the window washer tank that solved my problem The ground stud just fell off in my car. Also the ground wire on the intake manifold and go back into the bundle of wire and you will see a group of wires crimp together ,this may have a bad connection

    Good Luck

Stalling and Fuel Issues UPDATE 200 1990

    Hello again,

Well, sadly, my car continues to stall. I guess I jumped the gun on the 'all fixed' posts. Should have known better.

    Back to the drawing board.

Stalling, when was the last time you cleaned the throttle body and idle air control valve?

      Hi Dan,
Thanks for the tips! I just finished replacing the in-tank fuel pump and all looks to be well. Time and a few spins around the block will tell.
      thanks for the prompt reply.
      Rory

"the #4 fuse is 'hot' all the time, meaning when I pull the fuse I still have continuity."

The left (input) fuse 4 contact is connected to the Main pump, and thru it to ground.
The right (outpout) contact connects to the Tank pump as well as the O2 sensor heater, both of which are grounded.

So I believe your continuity reading is thru those 3 objects via their common ground.

"I lost cruise control some time back, which relates to the same circuit on the red-yellow wire that connects the O2 sensor, fuel pumps, etc. Could this be linked?"

I don't know of any connection between the Cruise Control and the red-yellow fuel wire. But if this was related to continuity checking, I'd suspect the "ground effect" as above.

      Hey Bruce,
Thanks for clarifying the fuse issue. I just finished installing a new in-tank fuel pump and I look to be in the clear.
      thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by hot all the time. Each fuse on the block has 3 spade connectors. The deepest (closest to the car) is the power in and is "hot". Some are ignition switched hot, and some are hot all the time. They are also grouped in the fuse block, such that one power feed goes to multiple fuses. The top two spades are outputs through each fuse.

Have you checked your crank positon sensor? If it is original I would change it regardless. It will cause all kinds of stalling, nostart, and backfiring weirdness if it is failing.

      Hi Jessie,

Thanks for the clarification. I got hung up on the fuse issue but after replacing the in-tank fuel pump all is clear now. I have the crank position sensor on my list of things to change, thanks.
