It's new engine time - What cars to source for B230FT L block Turbo head?

It's time to replace my blown B230FT of unknown vintage. Has a blown HG and probable cracked block. I've wanted another engine for years.

Anyway, I can't afford to replace every seal and sensor on it at this point, so I'm only going to fix what's obviously broken, plus the Timing Belt, Engine Mounts, and Intake Manifold Gasket.

I checked the PnP online inventory and there are 3 places within a couple-fifty miles. I plan to put the engine in the trunk of my 244, inside a plastic tub.

I plan to do a wood-dowel rod-bearing test and a compression test before pulling the engine. Are there any other tests I can do?

I want an L-Block with oil squirters and 13mm rods, which means 93 or later B230FT's.

Can I source one from a 940T? From a 240T? They made 940's up until 98 from what I understand.

I appreciate some help, I plan to go pull it next week, and install if Friday.

William

I believe 1995 will be the last 940 you will find in the US market. So your search is narrowed to 93-95. The only 240T you will find with a turbo L block is one that someone created aftermarket.

I don't understand the advantage of putting normal aspirated pistons in a turbo block. If that is the route you want to go why not get a nice NA engine and turbo change it? Are the larger rods something that only Turbo engines had in that time period?

There's one "98" 940 listed in PickNPull's Inventory, but that may be a typo. I've seen that some 940's were made that late, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I guess I'm just looking for a list of cars that have L-blocks and turbo-heads all in one piece already.

There's apparently a shape difference in NA pistons vs turbo pistons that makes for 9.(5?) vs. 8.7:1 Compression. That would be for a performance engine though, and I'm not building one at the moment.

I'm not sure if the larger rods were only for turbos, I think it was an evolution for the entire engine line, but I could be wrong. The NA engines lack the sodium filled exhaust valves, and I'd rather keep the special valves. ...I think. If it came down to it, I would be willing to take an NA engine over no engine, and slap my turbo on it. I would be uncertain about its durability though.

        hello
last year 940 in usa is 95. 98 in europe.
i would go for the newest 940 engine you can get so you benefit from the oil squirters.
the smaller rods were used somewhere in the mid/late eightys or maybe until later.
i believe the old b21ft and b23s had the thicker rods also but they are getting few and far between.
        good luck
        mike

          Thanks for the info guys.

Any info about solid vs. hydraulic mounts for the turbo motors?

The solid rubber mounts were used through the 1986 model year, both turbo and NA. In order to use them you must change both engine mount brackets on the block, and both engine mount brackets mounted on the front crossmember. I wouldn't bother. If you feel you must use those, contact me. I have all four brackets left over from a project.

The 13mm connecting rods were incorporated as a running change during the 1989 model year for both turbo and NA B230s.

You are correct that L blocks are 1993+. Those engines go quick in the Pick-n-Pulls. Both turbo and NA engines have the piston oil squirters. L block B230s came from the factory with the curved tooth timing belt.

I was just looking for new engine mounts.

FCP is only listing hydraulic mounts for my 90 740T. Did they previously sell solid mounts? I'm not loving the mounts I have in the car, I could feel the engine twist when I pushed it.

    Will,

That's a neat idea. I put my engine in the trunk :)

I would though, unless you a absolutely sure that your existing block is worthless, inspect your current engine for damage before buying anything.

I've always hated this engine. It had the block cracked and welded up about 10 years ago, has a serious HG leak, had a miss I couldn't ever fix, and I've always hated the thing. It also started having issues with low oil pressure and blowby into the crankcase. I had to tap a new spark plug thread... I'm glad to be rid of it :D
I just wish I could do a full rebuild on a new engine. If I did, I'd consider getting NA pistons for another turbo-block. Wishful thinking for now. What I'd really like is to rebuild an M47 or M90 and make a B234F+T engine. Hehehe.

I looked at the engine and the trunk and though "hey, why not?" Otherwise I have to rent a truck or something.
