1994 945 Seized Caliper pin 900

Hello All. I have a seized caliper pin on the right front brake assembly. It is REALLY seized! So I think that it will be easier just to replace the frame and pins. Can I buy these parts at Volvo or will I need to hunt them down somewhere else? I ask Because my errand running time this week will be very limited so of course I'll call my local dealer before I go there. I'm just looking for some forehand information. The Brakes are TRW ABS.

Problem solved. I ordered caliper frames from my local dealer in New Jersey. They were each about 35$ with a 15$ core value. The 2 local junk yards that I use now pull the parts for you not allowing you out in the yard. So I went to the dealer. Two days later I picked up the parts. This is when "Rich" the parts guy pointed out something unusual about the to frames. One looked brand new and came with both pins installed. The other looked like a reman part without the pins. Both had identical part numbers. There is NO left or right side difference, same part fits both sides. I bought both as I didn't know the condition of the left front brake. I was glad that I did as one pin on the other brake was also seized. So I mounted the "new" frame and pins on the right brake and the "reman" frame on the left with the 2 good pins from the old frames. cleaned and re-greased of course. I mounted a new set of Volvo pads to the previously mounted (2 months ago) chinese rotors. The brakes are now fabulous again. No springy, less than firm feel as the caliper flexes against the seized pin. These brakes are in fact one of the reasons that we bought this car. They have great feel to go with great power. My second favorite brakes only behind my old 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV ;)

thanks all
-Keith

You do not need a new caliper unless the caliper itself is leaking. instead, remove and clean the slider pins and replace the rubber boots.

Remove the slider pins, buff them on a wire wheel, use a small wire brush on a drill to clean the slider pin holes. Then clean the holes and pins with 99% alcohol, and put on new boots all around. The boots cost about $25 for all 8 from Volvo.

When the pins and holes are super clean and rust free, put lots of high temp grease from Volvo on the pins, and work the grease into the slider holes. Put on the new boots and you will be good to go for another few years.

Four years ago the stealership insisted that all four calipers needed replacement. On my suspicions, I took the car to a friend in another town. He confirmed the calipers were fine, just needed to clean the slider pins. If the fluid is kept clean and the brakes serviced, they should be fine.

Volvo sells rebuilt brackets for when the bore that the slider pin goes into is rusted or otherwise messed up. My dealer has them pretty inexpensively, but dealer prices wildly, if the pick n pull doesn't work out.

I have had 100% success ratio by just A)ripping the old rubber boot off with needle nose pliers. B)Squirting penetrating fluid into/around where guide pin goes into bracket. C)Grabbing the square part of the guide pin with channel locks perpendicular to pin and just start working back and forth. It'll come.

I just ran into the same problem on my 93 on the right side.

I took a pair of channel locks, grabbed the square outside end of the pin, and was able to finally rotate it by moving it back and forth. I worked it a while and then I was able to slowly withdraw the pin. Then I cleaned it up and greased it and put it back in. Works smoothly now.

Get a used caliper and holding bracket from a wrecking yard, or go to a self serve wrecking yard. The Pick-n-Pull price is about $20, but expect to pay more to have someone pull one and ship it to you.
