m46 difficult to get into second gear 200 1982

first, third, fourth, and reverse engage smoothly. downshifting from third to second is smooth but first to second can sometimes be hard. i just replaced the transmission fluid following the instructions from the haynes manual and didnt resolve the problem. still new at working on cars. does this sound a clutch problem? what should i be looking for?

thanks brickboard!

    Hey there.

It might be a clutch issue. What kind of condition is the transmission in overall? Rumbly or smooth?
I adjusted my clutch cable and still have issues with 1st gear engagement. I think the synchros are bad, but hopefully just adjusting your clutch will work for you.

    Here's my thread: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1441098/220/240/260/280/stretched_clutch_cable_synchros_shredded.html

    Happy Bricking!

Yes, it does sound like a clutch problem. Start with an adjustment. Now I drive an automatic now but as I recall there's a plastic adjuster which the cable goes through which must be adjusted. Not a very good adjustment system. I think there are specific instructions on the FAQ of this site.
If it's new clutch time I can tell you that it's a dirty, back-breaking and long job to do on the garage floor. Other than that it's fun.
