gear shift stuck in 'park' S90-V90

This evening my car wouldn't shift out of 'park', the gear shifter is frozen and not moving. Which things could I check before I get the car towed... I'm probably looking for a weekend with my car before I can do this anyways. The thing
has always felt somewhat loose and and a few times some wiggling was required
get the shifter moving, but it's the first time in two years that it's
leaving me stranded. I had the ignition switch replaced 2 years ago which fixed
a similar problem (it was more intermittent then, now it feels like something
may actually be broken in the shifter mechanism itself...)
Thanks!

It is probably the Over/Under-ride switch just behind the shifter.
That has been the cause in other Volvos.
It is under the fabric and I do not know how to get to it.
You could take the trim off and lube the switch, or poke a hole in the fabric and squirt it with WD-40 or oil.

It could be -- I don't think this switch has ever functioned properly
on my car though (not in my time), it just never seemed to do anything.
I pulled the shifter knob off (it comes out pretty easily, together with
the plastic cover that has "Winter-Sport-Economy" switch on it). The
overrride switch button just goes up and down, and I've no idea if it's
switching anything. I've seen the parts diagram in my manual, but I
can't figure from there how the thing is supposed to function, and
of course there's no info on that in my manual...
If there's any way to mechanically disable the locking mechanism I would
      be very interested to know.

OK, the problem turned out to be a faulty microswitch in the shifter
mechanism. After some digging in the old posts and checking the
700/900 FAQ, I learned that it's a common problem on this type of
car: 700-900 FAQ: Transmission Not Shifting Out Of Park.
For now I've just shorted the microswitch, intending to get
it with my next parts order and replace later. It isn't so hard to
replace, now that I've learned how to disassemble everything.
Everything's working for now, so I have my car back. :-)

Still, the shiftlock override button doesn't seem to be doing its
job: turning the key to position 1 and pressing the button, following
the owner's manual, does not seem to achieve anything: the shifter
        remains locked.

Any suggestions on how to fix it, short of getting a new shifter
        assembly from a junk yard?
