Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K. 200

Hi all.

picked up an 83 245 a couple months ago and I'm having an issue that's driving me nuts.

I haven't been driving this car since I got it, besides running it around the block a few times. I start it up and run it till warm a few times a week.
always seems to start and run well but my idle has been a bit erratic, so I cleaned the T.B. last month. it seemed to help. before I cleaned it I had an episode in which it stalled and wouldn't restart. changed the cap and rotor, plugs, and plug wires. it always started after that so I thought that was my problem. I pulled the IAC valve today to clean it, and after putting it back together it started right up. after 2-3 mins. it died and no restart.
when running it in the past, I would just start it and do other things in the garage. it normally dies as the temp gauge starts moving up to op. temp but always fired right back up.

I had a similar problem with my 86 245 for almost three years. Mine turned out to be the AMM intermittently failing. I found it by unplugging the unit when the car was having a bad day(with the engine off, of course), then restarting the engine, which smoothed out at idle. Of course this was after checking fuel rail pressure, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, etc.

    Regards,

I should mention it also likes to stumble under light throttle.

I am going to change the fuel filter and pull the FI relays. are they behind the glovebox? do I have to pull the glovebox to get to them?

      Thanks for the response.

the stall is under cold conditions, not hot. no stumble like its running out of gas when it happens. just like someone flipped a switch, even when it started right back up.

I have been trying to look at this logically, and it seems to me if the filter was clogged it would be more like fuel starvation symptoms. if it were the relays it would be a hot relay cutout type scenario, right?

what would be the symptoms of a bad fuel pressure regulator? should I focus on that at this point?

      thanks again for any responses.

BTW both pumps energize with the hot to 5 on the fusebox.

Two FI relays above passenger feet. Two small metal cubes.

Vacuum leaks and grounds are important to a good idle. I just realized after some time that the quick release ground connection on my cable was not grounding as good as it should of been. I connected the cable straight to the battery and now my idle is nearly always good.

I recently had a vacuum leak fixed thanks to another thread on here about the clamp around the intake hose to throttle body not keeping a tight fit. I used a cut piece from some paper gasket material found at national auto parts stores. That helped. Make sure all the nipples on the intake manifold are being used or plugged. There are a couple grounds on the manifold too, black wires under the bolts that hold the injector rail on I believe.

Not sure about the stall when hot.
