total cost of rack and pinion replacement by mechanic? 200 1987

Hi,

What is the price range (parts and labor) for a mechanic to replace a rack and pinion in my 240? I got a quote of "about $750".

Any recommended repair locations in Los Angeles?

Thanks,
G

gaucho - if you are in Topanga as your profile says, check here - http://www.cartalk.com/ct/mechx/find.jsp and cross-check with yelp.com or a similar local review website. This place - http://www.cartalk.com/ct/mechx/shop.jsp?id=16613 - sounds somewhat promising.

Picked up one at NAPA a few years ago for just under 200 dollars. Had to re grease the sealed inner tie rods a few months late though.

      PRICES NEW? No--just REMANUFACTURED 200 1987

As I said below, there are no new Volvo racks.

I don't care what the guy in the phone said. I just went to that site and found 4 racks, all "remanufactured": 2 Cardone, 1 Maval (a long-time rebuilder) and 1 Beck-Arnley who just repackages stuff from unknown sources.

If there were any new ones from Volvo's OE supplier, Volvo would list them under a part number that doesn't begin with 500.

FCP Groton steering racks 200 1987

Jurgen is the supplier to FCP Groton - www.fcpgroton.com. As I recall, they charge somewhere in the $225-250 area. They come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Perhaps you could find a mechanic who would install a rack supplied by you.

Is a rebuilt rack and pinion sufficient? Just got another quote for a new rack and pinion, same total installation cost as the first rebuilt quote. Mechanic said a new one would last 10-15 years vs. a rebuilt r&p lasting 2-3 years.

There are no "new" steering racks for a 240.

The Volvo part # is 5003666-1. The "500" means rebuilt.

However, I'd expect one from Volvo to be A-1 quality.
      But Tasca Volvo says "dscontinued".

      5003666 $580.90list Core$0.00 $440.90 internet price
Steering - Steering gear & linkage - Steering gear
      Steering gear, all models - power, 240, 260 1985 - 1990
      This item is Discontinued.

      I wouldn't trust that 2nd mechanic.

Be sure also to get a proper diagnostic. Known more than a few folks replace a perfectly good rack due to nothing more than loose tie rods...

That's not to say you don't have a worn out rack. Just be sure.

An expensive shop should charge $600. A cheaper shop, a little less. If you can supply your own parts, there's room to save.... but not tons.

Good point and I think I should state I did not supply my own parts. The repair shop did. I only supplied the cash. Hehe

$750 seems out of line to me, unless maybe they are using a brand NEW R&P.

Just so happens we had the R&P replaced on our ‘89 wagon March of 2009. Of course your price may vary.

    Here’s rundown from the receipt:

Remanufactured Steering rack w/ tie rod ends- (R&P)--$260
    Power steering fluid--$5
    Labor--$160
Total parts and labor= $425 plus tax.
This was done at a reputable licensed repair place.

I can't give you total with tax as they did a couple other things that involved a couple parts also that had tax but not associated with the R&P. Shop around. Do be sure the R&P you get does come with the tie rod ends.
Have your alignment checked after installation. I was lucky, mine was OK.
