How big of Hydraulic press needed for 122s bushings? 120-130

Getting ready to change all bushings. Harbor freight has a 6 ton press for $90. Is it big enough? thanks

If you do buy a press, get the 12 ton, floor standing one for $130. Mine came from Northern Tool, a cousin to HF, and has been quite valuable for suspension bushings. I haven't done any 120/140 bushings in a while, but the adjustable deck clearance with the tall frame on the 12 ton model (~4 ft high) is much more versatile, especially for larger A-Arms and using drifts that need more than a 2 ft span to get into the press.

HF does have a bad reputation, which is to be expected from a company that deals mostly with Made in China crap. That said, I have never done a bushings job but have pressed things in and out with a variety of tools I already own, like using a sturdy bench vice and an assortment of sockets for drivers etc.

Most of the harbor freight tools are junk. They won't come with the dies and receivers needed to press anything out.

I did all the front with a hammer and proper sized drivers. The only problematic one I can see, would be the large one in the lower link on late rear ends.

I just rebushed my entire car early this year. Considered doing the same thing (buying a cheap HF press), but decided against it. A press is a pretty bulky, cumbersome tool to have around the garage for something that sees very infrequent use. Also the HF models have pretty poor reputations. People bend the frames or fail the rams all the time.

All of the bushings can be removed without a press. It's not exactly fun or easy, but it can be done in an afternoon with the proper assortment of tools and techniques. The panhard bar bushings, front upper A arms, steering relay arm, can all be done with just a bench vise.

I had my local independant shop press the remaining bushings in. We take cars there frequently enough that the guy did it on his lunch hour for no charge. I'd expect a competent shop to be able to complete the work in under an hour, so figure $60-80 in labor.

I'm all for buying new tools to get a job done, but just couldn't justify it on this job.

I agree - I took my parts to the local tractor mech and he pressed out and in in less than an hour. He knew what he was doing! It was worth the $25 it cost to have it done and done without bending anything... That was on the 1800, but the Amazon will get the same treatment later this summer or early fall.

Might want to put some lubricant in these bushings. I didn't, and on a bumpy road I hear me coming a block away.

what kind of lubricant? when I was a kid we used to spray some sort of between the leaves in a leaf spring but then that stopped because the lube attracted and held onto abrasives.

I asked that question (too late) and got these answers:
