Well I see one responder likes the "vintage" look and another responder likes the "taller" look. To each his own. I've owned 245's both ways and prefer the smoother, lower, cleaner no rack look--in fact while I really don't like the looks of the sedans--way to gawky--the wagons look fine (sans rack and despite the awkward front) to me. Besides, the rackless wagon has a way better aerodynamic CD than the sedan or rack laden wagons. The 1980 245DL I've been driving for about 10 years has none. I've carried many things on the roof by putting down an old bedspread first--except for one time when I temporarily installed a removable rack--and then secured the load with rope/bungees--the tailgate handle makes an convenient anchor point in the rear and the tow hook works in front. Cords around the middle go side to side through the back windows. The most recent addition to the fleet - an '84 245 GLT Turbo/Intercooler - has a rack--it's coming off. Enjoy your 245 no matter what. -- Dave
