neutral safety switch 900 1993

Can I temporarily bypass a defective neutral safety switch? I realise I will lose reverse lights. The wires leaving my old one are pink, blue red, black and blue.

thanks,

Ron

I'm not sure I am talking about the same part. Does it look like this?

Volvo 940 8-Valve Gear Selector Switch 1993-1995 (OEM)

If so I have an extra somewhere, call me. the hardest part was disassembling half the console to get to it.

neutral safety switch ('Start Inhibit' switch on 940) 900 1993

According to the '93 diagrams, the Start Inhibit and Back Up are two separate switches.
Pink and Blue wires on SI Switch, Bl-R and Black on BU switch.
    I've never seen either one.

Bypassing should be possible, but your call.

Thanks. I'm surprised to find that current passes through this neutral safety switch enroute to the starter solinoid without the benefit of a relay. The switch looks robust enough but it mounts to 2 plastic nibs with a circular metal tab with an X in the middle. Mine must have been loose enough (one tab broken)to cause arcing and heat and smoke. I'm very tempted to wire the pink and blue wires together until I can find the whole shifter housing intact at a wreckers. I might be able to reinstall the BU portion only provided that part of the switch is still viable. I'll also consider drilling out the plastic tabs and replacing them with bolts.

The current passing through the neutral safety switch is relatively low amp - enough to trigger the solenoid, which is the relay in the starter circuit.

I bypassed the NSS in my daughter's car for a couple of days while I was waiting for a new part. No big deal, just make a strong mental note to make sure the car is in Park when starting.

Trivia time - I can think of at least one domestic car from the late 1950s that had an automatic trans, but did not have a neutral safety switch and in fact did not need one. Can anyone identify the car?

So, that's what I did and the car started fine with no smoke. Yes, I guess it makes sense that the solinoid is the relay for the starter. Will make sure it's in park. 1950s car eh? I can't even guess.
