940 power steering hose replacement 900 1995

Afternoon all,

Has anyone ever replaced the power steering pressure hose on a 940? I have one that is weeping (leaking fluid) and have done quite a lot of research as to which one to get (according to the FAQ, I have a CAM steering rack).

Anyway, I searched all the usual sites for parts and they all have the same one, which I ordered. Received it, put the car on a lift and spent almost 3 hours trying to get it on. Knew I would have a problem because it did look quite like the original. It's a little shorter than the original, and the angles on the tubing leading to the banjo fitting are different.

I couldn't even get the banjo end over and around the steering rack to attach it. Anyone had any luck with this?

A Tale of Two Racks (ZF and Koyo) on a 900 1992

The CAM and Koyo racks both have similar looking rack boots, with outer ends fitting snugly to the tie rod — unlike some ZF racks where the larger diameter boot ends fits onto a plastic disk. I said "some" ZF racks because the one I recently replaced on my son's '92 940 looked (at a glance) so much like the Koyo on my '93 940, that I convinced the Jorgen lady to send me a Koyo. (trouble ahead)

Much to my surprise, when the old rack was off I saw the ZF markings (and began to sweat a little). But the Koyo an ZF are virtually identical in appearance, and the Koyo went into the ZF's place with (virtually) no problem.

But if you compare the pressure and return ports on the photos below, you can see they are reversed (small=Pressure, larger=return). With some "tweaking" we fit the (ZF) pressure end to the Koyo rack, but there was no way to connect the return end. Luckily I had an old length of return hose with the correct banjo end. I spliced its free end to the (cut-off) upper hose section leading to the reservoir using a piece of copper tubing and four hose clamps, two at each hose end.

The nice lady at Jorgen accepted my apology and made sure that the ZF core was accepted OK.

Also note that you might see tight-fitting rack boots on CAM, TRW, or ZF!

Jorgen Koyo Rack, now in '92 940. Pressure Port below Return

    940 power steering hose replacement 900 1995

I just did this on two cars. While it is possible to use the aftermarket hose, it does not have the length required to fit well and is a bear to install. I bagged it and bought the OEM instead: the aftermarket hose is sitting in my garage. Highly recommended you buy the Volvo OEM hose instead (Tasca or Borton Volvo) which has the curlicue vibration damper in the metal pipe and is sized perfectly for the application. Rubber is better quality, too.

      Cheers Steve.

I was wondering what the loops were for. Learn something new every day. I was thinking about doing surgery on the old and new, but since you've been there before, I'll take your advice and order a proper one. Now 2 of us will have aftermarket hoses sitting in our garages.

      Thanks much!

I did mine last fall in my 940 and clearly had a CAM, but it was
spelled K-O-Y-O. The KOYO high pressure hose is different and will not fit. The bends at the end were clearly very different.
I was replacing the rack with a CAM and so ordered a new compatible hose from Rock Auto, made in the US by Edelman, and it was a perfect fit. I mean, really perfect. It was about $27.
The return hose is also different, but not much and a little 'cold setting' made that happen.

          jerryc,

I'm a little confused....you had a Cam or a Koyo rack before you replaced it?

Based on the 900 FAQ here I have a Cam rack and the hose (part 9191449) should have fit. Unless I have a Koyo rack and don't know it. It's not listed on the vehicle id plate at all. How to tell?

Like you, I thought I had a CAM. But it wasn't, it was actually a KOYO.
I changed the rack to a CAM/TRW, which uses the same fittings. So I ordered a new high pressure hose as I mentioned above and it fit and worked perfectly.

The point was, what is in the car trumps what you read online. If there is no digit on the plate then it may be a KOYO, thus your problem. But as mentioned they should be stamped somewhere on the unit itself. Of course, Made in Japan would be an indicator also.

Rack ID plate location? 900 1995

"If there is no digit on the plate then it may be a KOYO,"

The Jorgen lady said the 940 started using the Koyo in '93, as mine is.

Can you point me to the ID plate and rack ID numbers if possible?

Hey Bruce; the plate is on the pass side next to the hood pin/release, over the headlight. I don't remember which line indicates the rack, I think it's in the FAQ. It's at or near the bottom. I think but am not sure that '2' indicates a CAM and blank is KOYO, or something like that.

                  Thanks Jerry,
I should have looked there first, I know (duh). I found it on this FAQ PAGE . My '93 has the Koyo "1" as expected.

Did you see my ZF to Koyo swap post at the top of this thread? I was surprised to see CAM-like boots on the ZF. But I bought that car with about 180K on it so the rack may have been a rebuilt. [Art B thinks the rebuilders might use some kind of universal or generic tie rods, hence the unusual ZF boots.]

You are more than welcome; it's rare I get to help You. I read everything you write, so yeah I saw that. You are always thorough, and often with pics. I and many others appreciate it.

Rack ID plate location? 900 1995

My friend and I removed a rack for a 93 960 in a junkyard, we just grabbed the best looking one.
Turned out it was a Koyo rack and when we installed it in another 93 960 we found out the hard way the power steering hoses will not fit as it had a different rack.
Wish we had known about that before, as we could have taken the hoses off the junkyard car at the time of removal!
Finding a junkyard 960 with a Koyo rack will not be easy, and to buy the proper hose here in Canada will not be cheap.

The above reads wrong but I can't edit.
              This,
"...to a CAM/TRW, which uses the same fittings".
              Should say this;
"...to a CAM/TRW, which uses the same fittings as each other, but different from the KOYO."

                jerryc - got it, thanks.

I couldn't find anything stamped on the rack itself (except a sticker with a couple of numbers on it), but I did find that the boots have TRW with a part number on it. I'm going to make an assumption it is a Cam/ZF/TRW rack then(?)

Still racking my brain why the Cam/ZF/TRW hose won't fit, unless TRW boots can fit on a Koyo rack.

I copied the part number off the hose itself. I'll take a trip to the nearest dealer and see if they can source the part.

Right now it is bandaid fixed with gorilla tape and hose clamps. It works but I know it's not a permanent fix. Just buys me time to reorder the right part.

Also thanks to << lucid >> for the excellent write up and pics and to << Gus123 >> for the info.

                  Hi Alan,

I don't know what FAQ section led you to think you have a CAM rack. But I'm almost certain you have a Koyo, if it's original. If it is Koyo, the 940 data plate behind the right headlight will have a "1" at the bottom (see pic 1).

And maybe you have enough of a label on the rack, on the right side rear to match it with mine
                  (see pic 2)

                  pic 1

                  pic 2

After getting 2 totally wrong pressure hoses from FCP, and being told by Tasca Volvo it wasn't available, I went Beechmont Volvo and had one (perfect fit) in 3 days. But it was pricey at $126.69 with free shipping* (list $156.36). Part # 681935-4

                  * VCOA member 20% discount, free shipping over $100.

Then I messed up bleeding the system. A whole new adventure. I posted about it HERE .

                    lucid,

                    Here's what I have.

ID Plate - (with lower right corner blank)
                    Photobucket

                    Rack Boot - (TRW)
                    Photobucket

Banjo fittings - (pressure fitting on top)
                    Photobucket
After looking at the last picture, I guess I am about due for a rack swapout. First step is hose replacement, second is rack replacement (Jorgenauto).

This is what is buying me time to find the correct replacement. It's just weeping a bit so I put a bandaid on it for the time being.
                    Photobucket

Thanks again for the tips and the help.

The blank Data Plate (rack ID) is a mystery.

Sorry I goofed on the plate location. Mine is ahead of the right headlight not behind it. But your Banjo picture cinches it as NOT being a Koyo rack, with that pressure banjo being above the return.

The Koyo appears to be the only one with the pressure banjo below the return, based on FCP's pics of CAM/TRW and Koyo, and my pic of the ZF that came off the '92 940. Guess that's why the Koyo pressure line is unique.

Yea. I think I got gyped on the data plate.

Now that I figured out how to post pics, I'm just putting them on here just in case some one else comes across the same conundrum as I have.

I'm a long time lurker on this site, but new to posting. I've had this car from new and taught both kids how to drive in it. The young one is using it as his daily driver now, so I need to keep it in shape.

Thanks to your good self (and others) I have a pretty good idea on how to proceed.

                        Thanks for all.

                    lucid,

I had it up on the ramp yesterday, lying on my back in the global warming taking some photos. I'm trying to work out how to post them with labels like you have done. In the interim....

                    - My data plate has nothing in the lower right portion. Maybe Sven was in a hurry to knock off work that day.

                    - The pressure hose banjo connection is attached to the steering unit above the return line banjo fitting - much like in your most excellent "Tale of Two Racks" posting earlier.

                    - The boots say TRW on them.

Thanks much for your help on this. I'm not trying to be a knucklehead, just trying to find the right hose.

            Hi,

This is a line that came from FCP Groton:

If you have a KOYO rack, the rack will be stamped with the word "KOYO" and you may also see this word on the boot "Koyo".

I thought my rack was a CAM, but when it came time to replace the inner tie rods a closer inspection of the rack revealed the words KOYO on the boots.

            Gus
