How to add hotlinks and a few other tricks

So to expand on Art's & Will's notes.

Suppose you're composing a reply or even starting a new thread. Now suppose there's a post or web page somewhere else that you want to reference. It's really convenient for subsequent readers if you supply a direct link (hotlink) to it in your post rather than some obscure reference.

There are a few ways you can go about this. The first case uses Jarrod's aid and is very straightforward. Allow me to start with the nitty gritty details for those not familiar, then I can quickly get to the point in my later examples.

To create a hotlink to another post on the brickboard you can do the following:
o Display the other post, preferably in a separate tab (or browser window).
o As Art mentioned, Jarrod has made it easy to pick up the HTML to make a hotlink to a brickboard post by putting it in the box labeled "Select, copy to buffer, and paste anywhere". Just scroll down to find it.
o Select the web address to the post (in HTML) by hovering your mouse over the box. All text in the box will be highlighted as selected, including text that has overflowed and disappeared below the box.
o Copy the selected text to your clipboard (a system buffer) by right clicking on the selected text to pop up a menu then left click on the Copy function.
o Go to your composition and insert the HTML text for the hotlink from the clipboard into your text by placing your mouse over the desired location, right clicking and using the Paste function. The hotlink reference to the other post will look like "<a ....</a>".
o After you've submitted your composition, browsers will normally display the hotlink highlighted making it easy to find. Readers can then go directly to the referenced post with a single click.

Now suppose you want to reference something other than a brickboard post, say a topic in the 700-900 FAQ or a link to a picture in the Brick Pix gallery, but it can be any web page. I frequently want to do this.

First you need to find the address box in an existing post to use as a foundation. As Will mentioned, you then copy and edit it to make a hotlink to the desired location. Here are the steps:
o Display the web page for the 700-900 FAQ article you want to reference in a separate tab or browser window so it's all set to go. You can display any other web page you want.
o Now if you're writing a reply, go back to your composition and scroll up a bit to find Jarrod's address box for the message you're replying to. If you're starting a new thread, open a new tab or window and go find any brickboard post and use its address box. Copy the address box contents to the clipboard.
o Go to your composition and paste it into your reply to act as the foundation HTML code.
o Go to the window you want to reference and copy the web address in the address bar to the clipboard. You don't actually need to have the web page displayed. You can use any web page that contains a hotlink to it (such as a FAQ index page) and use the right mouse Copy Shortcut (Explorer) or Copy Link Location (Firefox) to pick up the address.
o Go to your composition. Select the text between "<a href=" and the first ">" then paste the new link address to replace the old address.
o Edit in a new label for the link to replace the old label. It goes between the "<a href=....>" and the terminating "</a>".

That's it, all easier done than said. After you've submitted your post, test your hotlink. Edit the post if you need to correct it.

I often find it simpler just to type the hotlink while I'm composing. I just enter "<a href=", paste in the web address, end it with ">" then type or paste the desired label text followed by the terminating address tag "</a>".

Want to underline your hotlink label (or any text) to make it more noticeable? Surround all or part of the label text with "<u>" and "</u>".

Note that for the Brick Pix gallery, if you want to include a link to the picture, proceed as above, but if you want to include the picture itself in your post then use the "<img source=..../>" HTML that is provided there.
