1997 S90 3rd brake light S90-V90

Hello for 2010,

I recently purchased an S90 and the upper brake light, as the thing in the rear window is referred to, is loose. I cannot push the plastic housing back (toward the window) far enough to get the housing to click into the retainer bracket. I have been meticulously careful to line everything up and it does slide up to the glass without a problem but it does not snap into place. Does the retainer bracket move as to be adjusted? Would that be accessible from the trunk? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance,
Len K

p.s. to Jared: This new spell check capability is great, it will get a workout from me.

I have replaced the bulb. There is no access other than direct clip/snap onto the back glass. Mine is cracked because the plastic has to be depressed slightly to snap on/off, and the plastic is too stiff. And I had to contort myself to reach that location, so I did not have fine hand control while balancing on my knees with my head bent down to reach the lamp housing.

      LKB:

Thanks for your input. The solution to my problem was to replace the light housing cover with the correct part. The previous owner had a cover from an 850 model in there. I learned this by examining the cover from my wife's 940 which has the same part.
While waiting for the new part to arrive I completely removed the light from the car. Slipping a thin blade under the light and twisting it to depress a notched plastic wedge-like lever accomplishes this along with disconnecting the two wires. This light was the source of many rattles that drove me crazy. The red plastic lens is detachable from its housing and has a slight amount of play in it. Stuff some foam rubber between the lens and the housing and it will stop rattling. The correct cover (from www.tascavolvoparts.com, $24.00) snaps into place by sliding forward and setting on an upper and lower snap. The only way I can imagine this coming off again is by squeezing the top and bottom of the cover while prying the it back with a flat blade. I replaced the bulb before putting this on, hoping to never have to do this again.
On the topic of rattles I also discovered the source of a loose muffler banging around type sound coming from the right rear. It was the back wall paneling in the trunk. I stuffed some foam rubber behind it and the car sounds like new now. I just love these kinds of fixes, and felt compelled to mentioned it. There is also a plastic backing plate behind the license plate that rattles when the trunk is slammed. I got rid of this rattle by stuffing some foam rubber behind the backing plate. This car would probably float with all the foam rubber , but it don't rattle.

      Len K
