Hello,
Sounds like your linkage that goes from your shifter to the side of the transmission came loose. Most likely you can slide under and put it back together and it will work.
Had a simular problem with my 86, had it parked on a slight uphill grade. Released the parking brake before I started the car and the car slid backwards just a little. After starting the car found the shifter did not want to go into gear. Gave it a pretty good pull and suddenly it was a free swinger. Knew the car was still in Park because it would restart when you turned the key. Had to chock the wheels and click the side of the shifter to Nuetral so the car could be moved to flat ground. The had to reassemble the linkage and reconnect it, you want to make sure the shifter is in Park before you reconnect the assembly.
The linkage is on the drivers side of the transmission and is well know for the bushings wearing out. That shows up in the shifter when you start to get a little play in it. You can get a new bushing kit and install it later but of course you want the car to shift into gear first. It seems there are several ways to install the linkage but only one right way. I think at one point or the other I was able to find all the wrong ways. Now start the car the first thing to do it to step on the brake is on before releasing the parking brake.
Good Luck,
Paul
