WISH IT WAS THE RELAY, NEW FUEL PUMP TIME........ 200

MY USUALLY FAITHFUL 83 245 STRANDED ME AT MY SON'S SCHOOL....

BEEN DRIVING AND STARTING FINE, NO ISSUES AT ALL.....

PULLED INTO THE SCHOOL LOT, SHUT IT OFF, #1 SON GETS IN, AND IT WON'T START....

I'VE REPLACED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING(FUEL RELATED) ON THAT CAR ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, BEFORE I FOUND THIS(AND OTHER) BOARDS..... NOW I KNOW >A LOT< BETTER....

MY FIRST REPLACEMENT, TWO YEARS AGO WAS THE MAIN FUEL PUMP.....THEN I LEARNED OF RELAYS, AND JUMPERING, AND REPLACED BOTH RELAYS, (I NOW KEEP A SPARE) CHECKED THE 25A MAIN FUSE....REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER, EVEN GOT A USED ECU FROM THE PNP.....

LIKE I SAID, SINCE THEN, THE CAR HAS BEEN FINE....AND I'VE BEEN LEARNING....THE IN TANK PUMP IS DEAD, HAVE A NEW ONE, READY TO GO IN, JUST WAITING TO GET AROUNDTOIT...I SUSPECT IT'S BEING DEAD, MAY HAVE LEAD TO MY CURRENT TROUBLE....I THINK IT BEING DEAD, KILLED THE MAIN..........

FAST FORWARD TO LAST NIGHT, I JUMPERED THE 5 & 7 FUSES, NO JOY, REPLACED THE RELAY, STILL NO JOY, FINALLY RAN MY LOOOONG JUMPER WIRE BACK TO THE MAIN FUEL PUMP, AND IT'S DEAD...BATTERY TO POSITIVE FUEL PUMP CONNECTION DOES NOTHING......

WAITED AROUND FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, GOT A RIDE HOME FROM THE EX WHEN SHE GOT OFF WORK, FOUND THE OLD FUEL PUMP I HAD PULLED TWO YEARS AGO, CLEANED IT UP, TESTED IT, AND IT SPINS FINE...........

SO THIS MORNING, I'M OFF TO TOSS THAT >BACK< IN, SITTING IN THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT, AS MUCH AS IT WILL EMBARASS THE SNOT OUTTA #1 SON(16 AND 11TH GRADE) BUT THAT'S LIFE....

OH, IT'S GOT PLENTY OF GAS, ANYTHING OVER HALF A TANK AND IT'S FINE WITH THE IN-TANK PUMP BEING DEAD, IT ONLY HAS 5-10 MILES SINCE A FILL........

GONNA BE FUN, ONCE IT'S RUNNING DOING THE CAR PICKUP SHUFFLE, WISH THE #1 SON HAD HIS LICENSE, I HATE SNAGGING RIDES FROM THE EX, BUT ALL MY FRIENDS ARE OUT OF TOWN ON BIZ TRIPS!!!!

    OK, SO NOW I KNOW THE FUEL PUMP IS FINE.........

    THIS MORNING, BETWEEN SHOWERS, I CHECKED FOR SPARK......

    USED A SPARE PLUG, AND SPARK WAS GOOD...NICE, BRIGHT FLASHES.....

    I CAN JUMPER AROUND THE FUEL RELAYS, AND HERE AT HOME(TOWED IT HOME FROM THE SCHOOL WITH THE EX'S 850.......THAT WAS A TRIP......)BUT I CAN JUMPER LEFT 5 TO RIGHT 7 AND NOT ONLY SEE SPARKS WHEN I CONNECT IT, BUT I CAN ACTUALLY >HEAR< THE MAIN PUMP RUN.......YET NO JOY, IT DOESN'T START.....

    NO SMELL FROM THE VACUUM LINE ON THE FPR, BUT BEFORE I COULD CRACK THE FUEL LINE TO ACTUALLY >CHECK< FOR FUEL, SHOWERS CHASED ME INSIDE......

    NEXT SHOWER BREAK, I'LL PULL A PLUG AND SEE IF IT'S WET.......

    THIS HAS ME >VERY< CONFUSED......I ALSO DID CHECK(JUST TO BE SURE) THAT THE CAM IS TURNING....I CAN FEEL THE COMPRESSION 'PULSES', SO I WAS FAIRLY SURE I HAD VALVE ACTION, BUT YA NEVER KNOW...TRUST, BUT VERIFY......SAW THE CAM MOVING....

    AND THE CAR HAS HAD FINE POWER, SO I HAVEN'T CONSIDERED A COMPRESSION TEST, SINCE IT WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN I SHUT IT OFF AND THEN JUST WOULDN'T START....

    IF MY PLUGS ARE WET, I GUESS I'LL JUST TOSS IN A NEW SET AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS??? MAYBE PULL THEM BEFORE I GO GET THE NEW SET, LET ANY FUEL EVAPORATE, AND TAKE A SYRINGE AND SQUIRT IN AN BIT OF OIL, IN EACH CYLINDER, LEST I AM EXPERIENCING THE DREADED GAS WASHDOWN AND LOSS OF COMPRESSION....THEN TRY STARTING ON A NEW SET OF PLUGS.......

      Sounds like it is safe to assume you have spark and compression, but fuel is not getting to the cylinders. A quick test of all that is to pull that FPR vacuum hose off of the manifold and use the port to squirt in a bit of carb cleaner, starter fluid, or other flammable substitute for fuel. You could check for wet plugs, but this is just faster.

      I think it will try to start, then falter, proving no fuel.

      Jumping the relays with the 5-7 is not quite enough to get the power to the ECU, although, yes, it will activate the pumps. This sounds to me like one of three possibles.

      1) Blade fuse wiring near the battery (corrosion).

      2) Fuse #12 corrosion.

      3) AMM died.

      To verify #1 and #2 in one fell swoop, peel back the boot on the AMM and probe with a test light at the orange wire, with the key on. Lack of juice here will be either #1, #2, or both. To test just #2, probe the right side of the fuse panel at fuse #12.

      To verify #3, try starting with the AMM disconnected. If the AMM is bad, you should get some action.

      If I'm dead wrong about no fuel, and it is flooded (you mentioned washdown!) it could be the original harness has broken off at the engine coolant temp sensor. I doubt this very much. I think if you're in this hemisphere, it is cool enough to cold start flooded, or you'd be smelling the fuel something awful.

        WELL, STILL NO JOY.........

        I SQUIRTED IN SOME EITHER INTO THE FPR VACUUM LINE AND GOT NOTHING.......

        UNPLUGGED THE AMM, AND GOT NOTHING...........

        GONNA PULL THE PLUGS TOMORROW, AND CHECK FOR WETTNESS, IF THEY ARE WET, I'LL LEAVE THEM OUT, MAKE A RUN FOR NEW ONES, AND SLIDE THEM IN.....

        WIRES, ROTOR, CAP, AIR FILTER, FUEL FILTER ARE LESS THAN A YEAR OLD AND LESS THAN A THOUSAND MILES ON THEM......SCARY THING IS, THE PLUGS WERE REPLACED ABOUT THE SAME TIME......

          WENT BACK OUT, SINCE I HADN'T ACTUALLY >CLEANED< THE #12 FUSE AS ART SUGGESTED, AND KNOW THAT SOMETIMES I SHOULD JUST 'DO' AND NOT 'THINK'......I CLEANED #12, WITH SOME EMERY PAPER, BOTH THE GOOD FUSE AND THE CONTACTS.....

          BOOM, STARTED RIGHT UP...........

          NOW LOOKING ON THE FUSE BOX COVER, NOTHING ON IT, AT THE #12 'EXPLANATION', SEEMS TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH FUEL, OR STARTING????

          WHAT DOES #12 ACTUALLY CONTROL?????

          AND ART, CAN I BUY YOU AN ADULT BEVERAGE?????? THANKS EVER SO MUCH.....

          ONCE AGAIN, I'M IN AWE.............

            WHAT DOES #12 ACTUALLY CONTROL?????

            It controls Key On +12 to the Fuel Pump relay coil, to ECU 18 ("wake up call"), and to the cluster warning lights.

            But fixing it doesn't explain the dead pump when you used your long jumper.
            Maybe a bad connection?

              WELL, SOMEWHERE IN MY RAMBLINGS, I POSTED THAT THE 'DEAD PUMP' WAS DIAGNOSED AS SUCH, BY A BROKEN SPLICE IN MY JUMPER LINE.....ONCE I RESPLICED IT(AND TODAY, PLAN ON SOLDERING THAT CONNECTION, AS WELL AS HEAT SHRINKING IT...) THE MAIN PUMP RAN.....

              SO MY ONLY REAL PROBLEM,(BESIDES OPERATOR SPACE ERROR) WAS A CORRODED #12 FUSE...

              AND TODAY, BETWEEN SHOWERS, I PLAN ON DOING WHAT I, AND EVERY OTHER MID 80'S VOLVO OWNER SHOULD DO AS PM, PULL EVERY STINKING FUSE, HIT THEM WITH EMERY PAPER, AS WELL AS THE FUSE BLOCK ITSELF, AND THEN GIVE EACH AND EVERY FUSE, AS WELL AS THE BLOCK, A LIGHT COATING OF ANTI-CORRO GREASE TO KEEP ODDBALL STARTING/RUNNING PROBLEMS AT BAY........

    WELL, WASN'T THE FUEL PUMP,I COULDN'T 'HOTWIRE' THE FUEL PUMP, BECAUSE THE SPLICE IN MY HOTWIRE WAS TOAST......

    PUMP SPINS FINE........

    CAR TOWED HOME......

    BACK TO SQUARE ONE, I'LL CHECK FOR SPARK MY NEXT DRY DAY HERE IN THE GREAT NORTHWET......

    GOOD NEWS IS NOW I HAVE A SPARE MAIN FUEL PUMP!!!!

    TRIED THE 'LOVETAP' YESTERDAY, JUST DIDN'T MENTION IT....

    AND >WITH< THE FUSES JUMPERED PROPERLY(THANKS TO SOME WONDERFUL PIX, POSTED A WHILE BACK BY A >REALLY< NICE GUY...) NO JOY.......

    Try smacking the fuel pump with a small hammer, you might get it to go.
