crooked belts from air conditioner pump 200 1989

Brickboard,

The belts have been squeeling on my 89 240 DL for some time now. Tonight I think I discovered the problem. The pullies on the air conditioner pump are way out of alignment. If I spray belt dressing on the air conditioner pullies my squeel will go away but only for a short time.

Can anyone tell me how to straighten the pullies out? Funny thing is that the pullies are cocked the opposite way from teh belt tension.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

There are some rubber bushings that suspend the compressor from its mount that may have collapsed. You'll be able to tell because one or more will be flattened on one side and the bolt running through it will be off-center.

    Cheap part, easy to replace.

If I understand your question correctly, the a/c belt is not aligned squarely with the crank pulley.

I have dreaded dealing with the a/c belt for years, but I figured out a solution last year when I needed to remove my compressor so I could convert the system to 134a.

On my 1990 240DL there are only two bolts to deal with.

With a friend to assist me, I took a strap wrench and wrapped it around the middle part of the body of the a/c compressor and then had my friend apply pressure on the strap wrench to tighten the belt.

Then, I reached in, and tightened the two nuts that keep it in place.

I was done and it was perfectly aligned with the crank pulley.

    I hope this helps.

    If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 279K looking forward to 300K badge (or sticker??). >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

      It Rolls,

      Thanks for your council.

I'm wondering if you could get to the bolts without taking off a bunch of components. It looks to me that the power steering pump is in the way. Plus it looks real tough to reach down in there if you try to go in from the top. Coming up from the bottom doesn't look like an option either. Please advise. Thanks.

You may be in to this for some time. I've had better luck taking the time to pull the battery box and fan shroud when I've decided to get in there. I'm also a proponent of using poly replacement accessory bushings (IPD sourced) over the aftermarket rubber ones. Good luck, and be sure to change out your belt(s) when you put this all back together.

thanks; getting at that crooked pulley 200 1989

Thanks for the help. I read where someone else was able to get down in there by removing the air mass meter and the air breather box. Looks like either way, I'll be taking some parts off. Its good to know that removing the power steering should not be necessary.
