Good day to work on the car today. 200

It was finally warm enough to do some work on the brick.I needed to replace all the studs on one rear wheel.I tried to be real careful and not disturb the e-brakes.Not much clearance to remove the old studs. While trying to pull the studs through the axle holes I guess the impacts caused a brake shoe to break from its' weld.So now I have new studs and lugs but have to order e-brake shoes.
Now I need another warm day.Any advice to make the e-brake job go smoother?
Hope you guys had some fun today.
Nelson

If it isn't busted off yet, the shoe might last a long time yet with some epoxy. I got 5 years out of this repair.

The shoe came off in one piece.I was tempted to not fix it because I NEVER use the e-brake.But I know better so I guess a replacement is next.Art, what type of epoxy did you use?I use a 2 part epoxy at work to do small repairs on jewelry. Is all 2 part epoxy the same? I would think so.Do you think I could just "glue" the shoe back on knowing I'm not going to use it?

Nelson,

I won't disagree with Art on the epoxy approach but it does bring up a safety issue... if it doesn't work. Note, I'm kind of a "safety freak" when it comes to cars so keep that in mind. The Emergency brake is just that, if the main brakes fail, that handle on the floor that you yank up on will help stop the car before you cram into the rear end of another car at a red light, or even worse, roll into cross traffic.

If you want to replace the E-brake shoes, have the proper tools to remove and reinstall the springs. The other alternative is thick gloves and needle nose vise grips so you don't rip your fingers to bits (DAMHIK).

Maybe more like a spring brake plier.

As you might have noticed, neither I nor the carmaker call this an "emergency" brake, though I can understand why you might feel someone could make a safer do-it-yourself repair using more new parts.

I also lean towards safety.I will order the e-brake shoes from FCP tonight. As for tools I guess you refer to the bent shape spring tool.I don't have this in my tool box so I guess I'll make a trip to Sears, got some money left over on a gift card.

If I extend my experience gluing half a shoe, I'd say absolutely you could do this. The only risk is that you lay the glue on too thick or don't squeeze it out enough, and have trouble refitting the drum. I used an industrial two part epoxy for heat tolerance. I would imagine JB Weld could handle the job. You're apt to do a better job than I did because you will have better access to clean the surfaces.

After some thought I'm leaning towards replacement. The car is an 87 and these e-brake shoes may be original.Who knows what is wrong on the other rear wheel.I need to replace one stud on my other wheel[rear right] and with the impact it may delaminate a shoe on the RR wheel also.

Not a bad idea at all, if this is good weather to do the job. The glue doesn't hold forever. Obviously the original didn't. When it goes, it breaks up and jams inside the drum and makes you think your axle is coming apart, so putting in a set of replacement parking brakes will buy you a lot more time until that happens.

Parking brake Concern!! 200

Hey guys, I'm not a 240 guy but I am a materials engineer and you guys are scaring me!!
Brake friction material is bonded with fairly high-temp thermosetting resins
that do NOT soften appreciably when they get hot.
Most expoxies start losing strength below 300°F and I would think that
UNLESS you had special high-temp epoxy specifically rated for hot service,
you are taking your life in your hands using epoxies for bonding brake linings.
Even though the parking brake is rarely used for emergencies, the heat of normal
braking can be conducted to the shoes and they could easily get that hot.
Larger cities have places that re-do brake shoes and clutch plates.
If you can't get new or commercially refurbed shoes, you should get them done by
someone with professional experience!

(And you guys mostly know that I am the guy who, if something CAN be fixed, will do my
utmost to fix it myself!)

Parking brake Concern!! 200

OK, George, I'll stop posting about my shade tree parking brake relining technique against the day I need to wet my cotton pickin' finger to sizzle on the rear wheel lug nuts when the old caliper pistons cease to retract. It is easy to forget about towing, and mountain driving, and the very real test a set of service brakes can get handed.
