Flame Trap 200

Ok, where is the flame trap located on my 240 sedan and how hard is it to change?

I would also think about checking your oil seperator box (breather box) that is connected to the s-shaped hose that houses the flame trap filter.

When I checked mine I had to replace all the hoses that makes up the flame trap system. When I pulled the s-shaped hose from the top of the breather box it was totally plugged up-and it wasn't sludge it was hard as a rock. When I tried to remove the box from the engine block the lip that fits down into the oil drain hose cracked and broke-I was careful but it was brittle. Had to replace it.

And if you need to replace your breather box definitely go with genuine parts (bought mine from Tasca-$35 compared to local dealer $56!!!) I learned quickly from reading numerous posts here on the BB that non-genuine parts when dealing with the breather box is a no no!

I agree with the other posters. But would also point out that ipdusa.com offers a "relocation kit" that places the flame trap in a location that makes it far easier to work on. Therefore you are more likely to service it regularly. I like mine!

Isn't the relocation kit for earlier models? Does it fit the later models? If so, then where is it positioned?

I believe starting in 88 Volvo relocated the flame trap to a manageable location so you don't need a kit. To see a photo of the flame trap [but not the separator] try:

This is the one I use on my 83 240DL. It raises the flame trap and locates it above the intake manifold. They have another similar unit (but somehow different) for 81-82 240. The original poster did not specify the year of his 200. So this may not work on later models.

My two cents. Since August, I've replaced flame traps in two '92 240's. Besides replacing the flame trap, I would not overlook replacing ALL hoses attached to the flame trap. I would add the hose that attaches to the oil separator (below the flame trap) and the larger hose that fits to the top of the flame trap in addition to the vacuum line mentioned earlier. The reason is that all these rubber hoses become hardened and embrittled leading to cracking over time. They also get made up with crap. This looks like your arteries and has the same overall effect. Heh, this car is 18 years old, an old fart that needs fresh and clean air.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

The flame trap is located right below #4 air intake/fuel injector.
It has two air hoses connected to it, the larger 1" hose comes out
towards the throttle body and connects to the air intake hose
right before the throttle body.

Probably best to buy a new flame trap before removing the old
one, I broke mine while removing it. Either way it was cruddy
and needed to be replaced.

Good Luck,
Joseph

It is located between the third and fourth cylinder intake runner on the intake manifold, I'm assuming you have a car with a B230F engine. Its not hard to change but go ahead and order a new flame trap and flame trap holder as the holder is usually brittle and will break. Also inspect the skinny vacuum line from the flame trap holder to ensure it isn't plugged up, if it is, replacement is highly recommended.

The fitting where the small hose joins the manifold is more likely to clog. That is source of the vacume.

What is the purpose of having both manifold and ported vacuum on the flame trap ? I understand the flame trap purpose is to keep possible backfire flame out of crankcase and big ported vacuum line to suck in the oil vapor in the intake but the purpose of manifold vacuum line there escapes me ...

There is little or no vacume in front of the throttle body. I belive there is a venturi princinpal at work whereby the vacume line to the manifold creates a larger flow from crankacse into the throttle body.
