I have a 1990 245 5 speed. Does anyone know if these cars had a switch to make sure the clutch was disengaged before it would start?

Mine starts clutch in or out.

I've never seen a NSS in a 240 stick-shift. It's been handy not having one several times - to move the car

Fortunately Volvo was smart enough never to put in Neutral 'safety' switches in their manual trani cars.

I was a bit surprised that there wasn't one in my 92 - with Volvo's harping on safety. Fortunately, I've only tried to start in gear a few times.
