tailgate swap 700 1988

A friend has an '88 745. It's tailgate was run into causing the tailgate to be permanently closed. We have located a '90 745 of matching color in a pick 'n pull. Our plan is to remove that tailgate this week. My optimistic hope is that the '88 and '90 tailgates are interchangable. Would this be correct? Any subtle differences in wiring of brake/taillights, hinge attachments, locking/latch, wiper operation, etc?

Thanks in advance.
For the fun of Volvos.

I wanted to bring some closure to this thread. We removed the tailgate from a '90 745 along with attached harnesses, struts, etc. The friend removed his battered tailgate and installed the '90 onto his '88. It fit and got the accessories working. His only challenge is to get some body repair in the area of the latch so that he can close and securely close the new tailgate.

I did explore the web for the Hollander Interchange manual. I'd leave it to the junkyard dealers to have copies and not the typical DIY. The PNP that I frequent has low overhead. These manuals are pricey.

Thanks for the info.

Visit a local junkyard and ask for their Hollander Interchange Manual, a list of parts used among various model years.

I believe they are interchangable...
