More on my overdrive (M46) issues 200 1984

So, after a bit more driving and realizing the behavior of my overdrive in my turbo wagon, I can offer up a bit more information...

The overdrive is coming on by itself, seemingly from start.. I start out in 1st gear, and under hard accelleration, I can feel it disengage. Furthermore, yesterday, in 3rd gear, I'd step on the gas and the rpm would rise, but no accelleration at all.. like having a bad clutch.. then the overdrive would kick in or out (couldn't really tell which) and I'd be accellerating again. That happened only a couple times.

I pulled the shifter boot, and all wiring looks ok. I pulled the fuse. I pulled the wire off the overdrive solenoid. So, I think I pretty much ruled out any possibility of an electrical issue.

Stuck solenoid maybe? Stuck valve? Maybe some manner of transmission flush? Just a shot overdrive?

If the shot overdrive, can it fail in such a way that the car simply won't go? Seems that way based on that 3rd gear behavior.... Is it possible to replace the overdrive without pulling the transmission? I do have access to spare trannsmissions, but.. man.... maybe come spring.

Ah well... Happy Blue Moon New Year!

(Next new years eve blue moon isn't until 2028)

I'm told it's not too difficult to replace the friction plates in the electric o/d unit. From your description, yours might be slipping.

Whatever you do, don't swap it out to replace with a 5-speed M47. Those have more problems; the M46 has a better reputation overall.

My lemon of an 84 240 did the exact same thing, when you were on the gas it would disengage and when I took my foot off the pedal it would engage through every gear. IIRC in mine it was the one way clutch between the trans and the overdrive that was toast, it ended up not letting me into reverse 80% of the time. I had to turn the car off wait 10 seconds shift into reverse, start the car and get enough momentum to paralell park. Was a huge PITA, but the rest of the car was not worth saving so I just put up with it till I found another one.

I'm an expert at frontal parelell parking though...

You mean Volvo made lemons? :-)

I've been thinking that exactly with regard to this car.. so many problems, so much work done, and such low mileage...

I'm not giving up on it.. it's just too damn much fun, and hey.. what else can possibly go wrong? (that was rhetorical.. please don't actually make a list)

I'm glad I really liked that first 240 even with it being a lemon, otherwise the experience I had with it would have drove me into a honda civic or some such vehicle. In its defense, my mechanic at the time said not to put a new trans in it ansd drive it till it died. I got a few years out of it, aside frome changing the oil and gas it limped along costing me minimal $.

It may be a dirty solenoid. Take it out and clean it. It is probably plugged with fine dirt. If the OD engages in reverse, you'll probably destroy it.

If that doesn't work, I have a perfect J type sitting on my garage floor which I need to sell.

Yes you can replace the OD without removing the transmission. I've done it several times. You'll want to stall the engine out in reverse, or engage the OD and let the engine coast to a stop. That releases the OD's grip on the input shaft, and lets it slide off easy. Go to the 700/900 FAQ and read some.
