would an '88 make a good parts car for a '90? 200

As the title states...

Parts car apparently in very good shape except for needing a head gastket (still runs, though), so I'd consider fixing it later on. In the meantime, could use parts to trouble-shoot my '90.

thanks

Steering, engine, alternator, brakes, other main things will swap. 88 has no CPS; different FI system.

So depends on what you will need. I'll still buy pre-89 cars for parts if cheap but I prefer to stay in 89-93.

Scrap the 90 and fix the 88 its a way better model yr!! Can still adjust timing and idle, FI system rock solid no CPS, ABS or airbag bullshit.

hi kidd- interesting comment. agree with it but think the idle can be adjusted on my 92 245. the the pull cable length can be adjusted which would advance or retard the idle position of the throttle plate. this cable is wound around the disc on the throttle. have also heard from agents at the junkyards that blown air bags have put many cars in otherwise repairable condition into the yard due to the cost of replacing this device. doesnt seem that difficult if you can get an intact bag from a yard. there is a long history of shyster priced repairs to bamboozle back yard mechanics(remember muffler bearings, vapor locks and rotating the air in your tires) into thinning their wallet. any experience with bag replacement? only 1 bag in the 92 245. my reading seems to say bolt in bolt out and disconnecting the plug after you have disconnected the battery and the capacitor under the seat does the job. fyi local clip joint told me $2k to replace air bag. thanks tons oldduke

Hi Brent,

The answer to your question depends on what parts you need. 1990 brought air bags and LH2.4 fuel and EZ116K ignition to the comparison. By "troubleshoot" most of us think in terms of fuel or ignition (get the car running) when it comes to parts swapping techniques.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
