Anybody do the auto to stick conv in an 940 16v wagon? 900

I think im gonna change my 940 16v wagon to stick instead of auto. Has anyone done this, any advice, is it hard? Im going to get an M46 from a donor car but am also thinking about the M47- I know its a little on the weakside but im not gonna race, or abuse it and the engine makes like 150ft. lbs but at 4450 RPM. So my point is that if the torque is so high up the rpm do I really need to worry about using an M47? Vs. the M46? Well I know that the M46 is good but deciding if I want the push button overdrive, It would be ok but the real 5th gear is nice too. Volvo never put an M47 behind the 16v as far as I know in an 945 anyway. Since the peak torque is so high I think it will be fine Vs. the B230 torque at 2750 Rpm.

There is a section on this in the 700/900 FAQ. Look under transmission. You'll have to change pedal assemblies, add the slave cylinder, master cylinder, tube, hoses, change the OD relay and possibly some wiring, change the drive shaft, and obviously install a flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate. I've done it three times on turbo 700/900s and assisted on others.

A few 16 valve cars were sold with M46. The M46 from one is currently in my son's 1984 760T.

Thanks for the reply, I have been the the faq on the conversion however I was kind of looking for inputs to the m47 idea. I may just try it and see.

        Hello
i recently installed the M-47 in my 95 944 turbo.
time will tell how it holds up, but many in europe have used this on turbos with good results.
this car sees stock boost only. my 94 945 sees 14 psi boost so i decieded to leave the auto tranny in that car.
seems over 200 hp the M-47s have some problems.
i didnt want a button to put me into 5th gear.
the one i pulled from JY had 200,000 on it. i took off the top and sprayed it out good and clean then overfilled with redline MTL.
i only drove it 500 miles so far, this weekend i plan on swapping axles to the (3.31) to lower the rpms at cruising speed. should help a little on the low first gear also + gas mileage.
        first tank got me 25.5 80% hwy 20% city/suburban.
dont know what axle the 16 valves got. hopefully not the 4.10 as this would be a high revving motha.
with new clutch disc,PP,T.O. bearing, machined flywheel and hydrolic clutch it shifts very smooth.
if you go this route do not remove the long bolts that hold the tranny mount to the tranny. i did this and now i have a leak on the fifth gear housing 8^(
        good luck
        mike

The M47 appears to be weaker than the M46. I wouldn't use one.

          Hi John.
we will see how it goes as you know i did the M47 swap.
should be interesting. i read the insides arent all that different.
i will be saving the auto i removed thats for sure.
seems the M-90 arent all that special either, and hard to get parts for.
          later
          Mike

The M90 is allegedly very strong. There is a local shop which will repair them, they use M56 (850 5 speed) parts.

The M47 should be the same in the first four gears, but they have a bad reputation. Third gear is the gear which breaks first in the M46. We replaced one a few months ago with an M46 from a 16 valve car. The overdrive was a P/J type. A better OD, but very scarce. Only found in late 1990 through 1991 cars, and Volvo replacement transmissions.
