Top Cam Gear allingment 700 1992

I just changed the timeing belt on my 1992 745 turbo wagon today. The after I got everything back togeather, ti seemed as though the top cam gear was not perfectly alinged with the dot on the plastic cover on the back. My mechanic said that was just a guideline and that I was not a tooth off and that I was worrying too much. Guess that is just my nature. Car seems to drive fine, but now I'm loosing sleep as I don't want to burn a valve or something.

Your mechanic is right, the dot will never align perfectly. If you are off by a tooth in either direction the dot would be a much greater distance out of alignment. You just have to select the position that is closest.
    Sleep well.

quick rule of thumb 700 1992

if you are off a tooth or so on the cam belt you car will act one of two ways evrytime.

    1. it will pull off the line like a locomotive and have no top end at all....a real dog past 40

2 or it will be real dog until 40 or so and then suddenly come to life

if yours does neither you did just fine

If it ended up off a cog it will not damage the engine. What it will do is run poorly- lacking power.

If it drives fine it probably is :-)
