shift issue S90-V90

I am the new owner of a 1997 S90 in mint condition with 117,000 miles. When the car shifts from 1st to 2nd, there is a noticeable hesitation and shudder, then it goes smoothly after that. The same thing happens on the down shift from 2nd to 1st. I was told by the previous owner that the problem is in a sensor, and not the transmission. Any help out there?

Could be a sensor or a solenoid valve but first things first.

When the last time you changed the ATF?

I was told by the previous owner that the 100k service had been done(transmission flush, timing chain, etc), so I'm assuming that that was not an issue. He was told by his mechanic that it was a sensor in the transmission and would cost around $100 to fix.

There are 3 solenoid valves located in the valve body. A flush may solve the problem, if not, find out which solenoid valve is the problem and all you have to do is drain and drop the pan, one connector and the solenoid is out.

Info from the owner or mechanic sounds a bit fishy. There is no timing chain, but there is a belt which gets changed at 70K. There is no tranny fluid flush or change at 100K. There is no sensor "in" the transmission. Externally there is a temp sensor, speed sensor and gear position sensor, a fault on any of these will trigger a flashing light.
Although Volvo do not talk about flushing real world experience here and elsewhere says it is beneficial. I would do that first, preferably with synthetic ATF.

David has given you good information.

Building on what he says I would start with a fluid flush with good Mobil synthetic ATF. There are many DIY descriptions for doing it here. (Real easy)

About the only thing that would make the symptom you discribe would be sticking solinod valve which the flush may cure. If not the valve is behind the bottom cover on the transmission and shouldn't cost a lot to replace.

          Good luck.
