radiator recommendations? Cryomax? 200

Its radiator replacement time for my '87 245, the current one is leaking and atleast 12 years old, if not the original. I'm looking at what IPD offers because they are local for me (no paying for shipping). They have a 3-row all metal Cryomax rad, anyone have any experience with this one? They've also got 2 different plastic/aluminum rads although no manufacturer listed. Any thumbs up or down for any of IPD's radiators would be helpful, especially interested to hear about the cryomax. Thanks!

An OEM replacement from Nissens will be fine.

I started getting signs of overheating shortly after moving to the Phoenix area, and all signs pointed to the radiator. As an engineer and also a long-time 240 owner, I did my research and ended up going with an OEM -type replacement. The original rad went 11+ years and 150K miles, and the plastic didn't crack, the PO just never serviced it and it just had inadequate flow. That was 6 years and 6 blazing hot Phoenix summers ago, and I've had no cooling problems since then.

You can source a Nissens rad from FCP Groton, but respectable local radiator shops (like Performance Radiator out here in central AZ) should carry them as well.

I did decide to go with the 2 row nissens rad from FCP and wait a week for shipping, rather than try an unknown quantity (Cryomax). I would have tried a junkyard but my local one is experiencing a paucity of 240s at the moment. Thanks to all for your comments.

I was in IPD a couple years back and priced their radiators and thought they were Looney Tunes on their prices for either one.

They didn't mention the name then probably from the look on my face.

The plastic capped one I would stay away from. Because I had the original one on my '91 cracked at the hose inlet. When I went to replace the whole radiator, the connection just snapped off from the tank hose and all. Scary it could have happened going down the road just as easily.

The only advantage I could justify owning another would be if I was racing and wanted to save weight and had a turbo tweaked out. Their about seven pounds lighter and I presume they will remove more heat more quickly than brass. Besides if your are a racing buff you will under the hood checking things out all the time like it was a new girl friend trying to get a better tuned sound or something?

I scrounge the PUP for mine. I look for all metal ones off a newer car. Some previously owned car, like yours! For those that have had treatment and good coolant in it. Then I look into the hose ports to see if I can see calcium build up out of the ordinary. Some people just don’t know to use distilled water or buy premixed but with what?

60 (50 plus 10 core) bucks compared to 200 to 300 I find easier to fathom. I apply 5 to 9lbs. air pressure to them with a gauge. If it holds with no leak down, it’s on up to the shelf.

Four cars, all having metal radiators and with a spare. I have a spare complete engine and transmission too. Now that’s backup security!

As far as foreign made, do we have any other choice in this country? I have only heard of a company named Modine making radiators over the years. They use to make them for cars and commercial purposes. I think they were in India-na, the one in the USA. I don't know if they exist any longer and who says they aren't importers too! Most I see are from Thailand, Korea or Japan in PUP.

The Nissen brand is popular but I haven’t paid attention from whom they are made by, sold by, or how much! In fact, the one I just put up on the shelf. I I think it was a Nissen radiator. Now darn it, I got to go look the next time I think about it.

    Happy Hunting

    Phil

      I chose recycled 200

I've been using "recycled" radiators. Best way is probably to pay a radiator shop a few dollars to pressure-test it but if it looks good as machine man described then you might just put it in and test by using.

Self-serve junkyard or full-serve where they bring it to you. Either way, the yards I've used will warranty a radiator for a short while so you have time to verify it holds water.

I'm, uh, shocked...I wish. If it comes with any kind of guarantee, it may or may not be worth doing. So many of the Chinese consumer products haven't met my mediocre standards that I'm just about to personally stop buying any of it. Are the three row aftermarket radiators they used to sell (Nissens, I think they were) no longer available?
